Do Not Forget

This Shabbat, we are commanded to remember Amalek's barbaric and savage attack on the nation of Israel upon leaving Egypt. They attacked the weak and infirm. Yet, we still remember the war not simply as a commemoration of a physical battle, but an ideological one. The Torah attests that this struggle with Amalek involves not only our nation, but God. Until the time of the Messiah, the battle will not be won.

What is Amalek's insidious ideology?

Their philosophy is one of "Social Darwinism." Only the strong should be allowed to prosper, and that it is against the natural order of things to help the weak. There is no place in this world for mercy and compassion. There is only power. Amalek does not recognize that every human being is created in God's image.

However, it is not simply enough to remember Amalek, but we are enjoined to never to forget. (Devarim 25:19). What does that mean? If I remember, I will not forget. Furthermore, how can God expect us never to forget? Forgetfulness is not a deliberate act, but natural and part of our psychology.

The Gerer Rebbe, Rabbi Yitzchak Meir, known as the Chidushei Harim, offers the following important answer. He explains that we are not speaking about forgetfulness of facts, but a loss of our identity and spiritual principles. This kind of forgetfulness emerges from conceit and arrogance.

When we are preoccupied with ourselves and inflated with our own egos, we become absent minded to our higher purpose as a nation and as Jews. We must never become complacent in our mission and identity. We are engaged in a struggle for revealing Godliness in the world. We need to be vigilant in this sacred task. Hence, the mitzvah is never to forget this holy role.

In our own generation, we dare not forget the contemporary Amalek, the Holocaust. The recent legislation in Poland criminalizing people who blame for any participation in the atrocities of the Holocaust is a stark reminder why we must never forget. For this reason and in this spirit, I urge everyone to join us this Shabbat morning for the reading of Parshat Zachor. In the sanctuary, the reading will be at 10:15 AM and 11:30 AM at the end of minyan. Also, please join us Monday evening at 7:30 PM at CAS for a special program, A Young Man and a Survivor: Perspectives on the Holocaust featuring Judith Altman and Aaron Liebskind. We will remember and never forget.

May this Purim herald a time when Amalek is destroyed and the Messianic age when God's presence will shine and be revealed over the entire world.

Wishing you and your families a Shabbat Shalom and Happy Purim,

Rabbi Daniel Cohen

A Timely Israel Advocacy Message - Join us in DC for AIPAC Policy Conference - Special Discount This Week - Make Your Voice Heard!

Dear Members and Friends,

Each year, the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) convenes the largest and most significant U.S. - Israel policy conference in North America. This year's conference will take place March 4-6 in Washington, DC.

Some 18,000 men and women, including many non-Jews, will gather to learn more about Israel, its blessings and gifts, and about the challenges Israel faces. We will then go to Capitol Hill to lobby our members of Congress to ensure that our government continues to promote the special relationship Israel has with the United States.

Policy Conference is an extraordinary opportunity to celebrate and become best informed about Israel's growth, vitality and contribution to mankind, from the world's leading experts. It is an opportunity to hear from the leadership of the Israeli government and the opposition and from the leadership of both parties in our own government as well.

CAS has had a significant delegation each year, and we have learnt much and have had a wonderful time together.

You care about Israel, and this is a wonderful, unique way to delve into substantive issues relating to Israel and to feel with her more deeply. We promise you an exhilarating experience!

Here is the link: www.policyconference.org

Please join us. If you have any questions, please be in touch. See you in Washington!
