Shabbat Shalom

The coming Thursday marks not only the secular New Year but more importantly a fast day, the 10th of Tevet. The day commemorates the beginning of the siege on Jerusalem about 2500 years ago. The event led to the destruction of the Temple on the ninth of Av, the saddest day on the Jewish calendar. The fast begins at dawn (5:51 AM) and ends at nightfall. (5:11 PM)

What is the message of the fast for us today?

We believe that a fast day is not simply an opportunity for gastronomic distress but rather an expression of solidarity with the Jewish people. It is a day to collectively awaken our souls to our national plight and recommit to dedicating our lives to G-d, Torah and the Jewish people. It is a day of national and personal introspection. Every occurrence in life is under G-d's providence and in times of insecurity and threats to Israel a fast day is intended to arouse G-d's mercy and pray for peace.

Not a week goes by without me being asked about Israel, anti-semitism and current events. From afar, Israel appears in one light but up close we are privileged to a different perspective. This Shabbat, I will share some post Chanukah reflections from my recent trip to Israel with the MALT participants.

Also, please take a moment to think about supporting the shul as we approach the end of year. Thank G-d, we provide multiple gateways of connection for a broad membership and we are grateful for your generosity and engagement. You can easily make a donation to our Chanukah Appeal - just click here

Wishing you and your families a Shabbat Shalom and blessings in the weeks ahead
