Shabbat Shalom

In this week's Parsha of Vayakhel, the Jewish people are called upon by God to donate to the Mishkan and give of their best, their talents and resources to create a sanctuary for God to dwell. The campaign is hugely successful.

It is no coincidence that it is also Shabbat Parshat Shekalim, the first of the four special Shabbatot prior to Pesach. Shabbat Parshat Shekalim marks the occasion of the collection of the half shekel to replenish the Temple treasury and, in the time of the Torah, to fund the building of the Mishkan.

The Midrash offers a cryptic comment about the mitzvah that reveals a fundamental truth about Tzedakah. Moshe did not understand God's command to take the shekel and the midrash states that God showed Moshe a coin of fire to illustrate what exactly should be collected. Why fire?

The answer is as relevant today as in the time of the Torah. Money, like fire, possesses the potential to be helpful or hurtful. Used properly, fire can cook food or provide heat. However, fire can go out of control and burn and destroy. The same applies to money. It can be used as a vehicle for good but too much devotion to it can lead to a person's downfall and destruction.

Never develop too strong an attachment to material possessions. If we do, when we lose them, we will feel as if we have lost a part of ourselves. This will lead to anger, frustration and sadness. Rather, we should attach ourselves to giving, Torah and mitzvot. Investment in these areas are truly eternal and will yield life long happiness. They can never be lost.

Sir Moses Montefiore, a 19th century Jewish international diplomat and philanthropist, was once asked how much he was worth. The wealthy man thought for a while and named a figure. The other replied, "That can't be right. By my calculation you must be worth many times that amount."

Moses Montefiore replied, "You did not ask me how much I own. You asked me how much I'm worth. So I calculated the amount I have given to charity this year and that is the figure I gave you. You see, we are worth what we are willing to share with others." What we contribute to the world is our legacy.

In this spirit, I want to thank everyone who has contributed to our annual dinner paying tribute to very worthy honorees. It is an investment in our future. If you have not yet done so, support our annual CAS Youth Fundraiser by making a donation to directly benefit CAS Youth programming! Each participant will receive a beautiful Mishloach Manot from CAS and be included on a scroll of sponsors. This year, a portion of the proceeds will be donated to Lema'an Achai's PurAm Echad project, helping needy families in Israel affected by the war. Learn more at www.lemaanachai.org.

God willing, the new month of Adar will ignite deeper and broader giving and the return of the hostages and darkness to light.

Wishing you and your families a Shabbat Shalom,

Rabbi Daniel Cohen

Israel Updates
Israel MEALuim Update - Our Support Matters!  To Join the Mitzvah, visit https://tzohar-eng.org/mealuim/

Rabbi Cohen-- Your community's participation in MEALuim has made a significant difference in the lives of IDF miluim families. Especially now, as the war has extended into almost 4 months, the absence of a spouse and parent is even more profound and difficult. The homefront has become one of the more important places where we need to place our support. Overall we have thus far provided over 5000 meals to hundreds of families.Using Tzohar's strong connection we have been able to identify and serve those most affected by their soldier's absence and with limited local support. We have focused on ten yishuvim, and sporadic individual families.15 Agudath Sholom Congregation members participated thus far, donating 418 meals. The recipients of these meals were primarily families in Katamonim Jerusalem, an area with many young men in miluim. Yasher Koach!! Please deepen and expand the support!
Am Yisrael Chai
