Lech Lecha: The Right Mesage at the Right Time

In between Mincha and Maariv, we often share an insight from the weekly Torah portion. Early this week, I shared an idea which in a Divine way seemed to be the right message at the right time.

Parshat Lech Lecha begins with God's directive to Avraham and his family to leave their homeland, birthplace and country and go to the land of Israel. It is the prime text for Israel as our homeland and the requisite journey through history of every Jew. We are all required to make the journey.

Rabbi Nachman of Breslov comments on the wording of "Lech" to "walk" as teaching an important mindset in relationship to Israel. Walking implies challenge and struggle. Our commitment to Israel requires effort and deep unabiding dedication. If we wait for "quiet" in Israel before visiting, we may never go. Israel is not Disney Land, but our Motherland. It is precisely in moments of crisis when Israel needs our support even more.

Lech Lecha challenges us to dig deeper on behalf of Israel. It is the right message at the right time. Unfortunately, the recent attacks in southern Israel are another reminder of the fragility of peace and our need to express our solidarity in multiple ways. It is very fitting that this Shabbat, we are hosting a wonderful organization, Friends of the IDF, which offers support to our brothers and sisters on the front lines in Israel. We welcome the soldiers who are joining us this Shabbat.

As I was walking out of Shul early this week, a young man approached me who was visiting with his wife from New Jersey. He asked me to take a picture of the Dvar Torah, so he could remember it. I asked him why and he explained that he and his wife are in the midst of deliberating about making Aliyah. They are being torn back and forth and this message was the right one at the right time. We exchanged emails and I offered him strength on his journey of Lech Lecha.

May we share good news from Israel in the weeks ahead and may we possess the courage to move outside our comfort zones and walk the walk in our journey in support of and to the land of Israel.

Wishing you and your families a Shabbat Shalom,

Rabbi Daniel Cohen

Friends of the IDF We are excited this Shabbat to partner with the Friends of the IDF and grateful to welcome to IDF soldiers to our community. They will speak on Shabbat morning before Adon Olam and invite everyone to hear their stories.
