Profiles in Courage
From where does courage emerge? In a moment of crisis, why do some choose to stand idly by while others take risks to help another person? This week, under unfortunate circumstances, we witnessed two people who acted with courage and bravery.
Two Israelis fought back at attackers involved in a rash of Palestinian assaults on March 8th. Yishai Montgomery, 26, was dubbed "guitar hero" in the Israeli press after it emerged he smashed his acoustic guitar over the head of a knife-wielding assailant who killed American tourist, Taylor Force, and wounded 12 victims in Jaffa.
Montgomery said he had been playing his guitar near a beach in southern Tel Aviv when he heard commotion from a nearby road.
Yonatan Azarihab, a man in his 40s, pulled a knife out of his neck after being repeatedly wounded in a separate attack and turned the weapon on his attacker. We wish Yonatan a full and speedy recovery.
In the split second when hearing cries or in Yonatan's case, when himself wounded, what spurs action? They are both profiles in courage. Would we do the same?
Rabbi Nisan Alpert explained that a person will act bravely under fire only if he/she makes altruistic choices on a daily basis. In a moment of crisis, a person acts instinctively based on the fiber and fabric of his/her personality and values. The small decisions - whether to stand idly by or advocate, to take or give - prepare us for the moments under pressure when are called upon to act with the ultimate courage.
Do we make decisions based on principle or pressure, conviction or convenience?
G-d willing, we will never be confronted with the choice of Yishai or Yonatan. However, our world needs more people of spiritual strength. G-d willing, each of us will do our utmost to engage and elevate, act with conviction and courage for the sake of our country, Israel and our people.
Wishing you and your families a Shabbat Shalom,
Rabbi Daniel Cohen
Yasher Koach to Anat Chavkin and Rhonda Schaffer-Maron for organizing our first ever CAS Friends of the IDF Shabbaton and to Josh and Stephanie Bilenker, Glenn and Maria Reicin, Jeff Maron and Rhonda Schaffer-Maron, Farren and Hillary Isaacs, and Marc and Anat Chavkin for hosting soldiers. Warm welcome to the IDF soldiers joining us this Shabbat. They will speak after musaf, during youth groups, seudah shlishit, and host a question and answer session after Sanctuary Kiddush.
Service Notes
  • The 7 am Shabbat minyan begins this week. Speak to Hecky Attar for more information.
  • Code of Jewish Law will take place at Ari Lieberman's house at 4:35 pm.
Rabbi Cohen's Halacha Question of the Week - Children at Megillah Reading
  • Question - Is there an obligation to bring children to hear the Megillah reading on Purim? If so, what is the appropriate age?
  • Answer - The mitzvah of hearing the megillah extends to children. Although they are not yet Bar or Bar Mitzvah age, the prevalent custom is to educate them in the importance of the hearing the story. The miracle of Purim testifies to G-d's presence in the world and the more who attend, the greater the glorification of G-d's name. This year, we will be inviting the children to join us in the sanctuary for the Wednesday night reading. Although a child may not understand the reading, we believe that the spirit of community and the ambiance at the reading creates an impact. However, the Halacha states clearly that only children who can sit for the reading should attend. Please use your best judgment. G-d willing, after the reading, we are planning fun activities to further enhance the joy of the holiday. Looking forward, G-d wiling, to celebrating with everyone!
Shabbat Table Conversation - Pekudei The parsha highlights the Divine in the details. Every vessel and accounting is recorded. Review your week or day in the most detailed away and like Moshe, render an account. What were the moments that you acted in accordance with G-d? When were the moments when you sensed the Divine in the littlest of details?

Dr. Dovid Katz: The Old Hebrew -Yiddish Conflict and Its Ongoing Legacies
Dr. Katz's involvement with Holocaust issues started with his thousands of hours of Yiddish dialectological interviews with survivors from the historic Lithuanian lands and turned to both academic research and public activism when Lithuanian prosecutors began accusing survivors of "war crimes" for having joined the anti-Nazi partisans. He coined the term "Holocaust Obfuscation" to define 21st century East European revisionism and in 2009 founded the web journal DefendingHistory.com which he has edited since.
