Shabbat Shalom In Tribute to Sol Young In 1989, on the 100th anniversary of Congregation Agudath Sholom, an article appeared in the Stamford Advocate in commemoration of the milestone occasion. The article began, "If after a century of spiritual leadership in the Jewish community Agudath Sholom still seems Young at heart, there are two very good reasons: Sol and Betty Young." This week, Sol Young, passed away. He lived a life of legacy in so many ways. As members of Agudath Sholom, we owe a debt of gratitude to him and his wife, Betty, she should live and be well, for their dedication and generosity to the synagogue. Sol was Rabbi Ehrenkranz's right hand man through the years, his friend and partner in the establishment of the new shul building in 1965. I was moved by one of Sol's quotes in the article, which embodies his life and serves as a worthy model for all of us. "I told the Rabbi some time ago there are three things a man has the privilege to do: to raise a son, to plant a tree and to build a place of worship. It is sort of an unwritten honor." He understood the three most important priorities in life - his family, his faith and leading a life of impact. In fact, near the end of his life, he met his first great grandson, Akiva Bar Navi Lev, who lives in Jerusalem and came to America for a visit. The baby's name is truly a reflection of Sol's enduring legacy. Like Akiva, Sol possessed a contagious optimism for life, he was a visionary and most of all, his heart was wide and deep. One of his grandsons, Danny Teicher, a musician, composed this video tribute to the love and life of Sol and Betty. http://youtu.be/mpgna8n3UMI We wish Betty and her family much comfort among the mourners of Zion and Jerusalem. We rest on the accomplishments of men and women, who enabled our shul to thrive for over 125 years. As we move forward in the months ahead on our annual dinner and the completion of our capital campaign, may we be inspired by the model of Sol Young, who viewed his commitment to Agudath Sholom as a privilege, passion and priority. CAS Teens | THIS WEEK IN THE CAS TEEN WORLD By Yaakov Faratci, Teen Director Hi! I hope everyone is having an amazing week. We all know that Shabbot is supposed to be the highest point and this Shabbot will be no exception. - On Friday night we will be having a mock-tail oneg at the Liebermans, starting at 8:30 PM. This is an oneg involving making your own non-alcohol yet exquisite mock-tail. That night we are blessed with having fifteen Jewish teens from public school join our community to experience being part of a teen world that we can make so welcoming and inviting for them and redefine how potentially sweet Shabbot can be for any.
- Shabbot morning we will have teen minyan.
- Following Shabbot, we will be having a "Chopped" event at the shul starting at 7:30. The teens will be cooking dishes with random ingredients and changing the culinary world. Join us for a lecture series featuring parenting experts who are lauded for their clear, concise and practical advice on raising socially, emotionally, and physically healthy children in today's world. Body Image - At a surprisingly young age, children internalize messages from our culture and from their families about body image. This workshop will focus on steps that parents can take from the beginning to help children and their families develop healthy relationships with food and body image.
