Standing with Rabbi Shlomo Riskin: A Torah of Peace

One of the most heartening dimensions of Rabbi Aaron Rakeffet's visit to Stamford was his message of pluralism within Torah. From the Lubavitcher Rebbe to Rabbi Aharon Kotler to Rabbi Joseph Soloveitchik, Rabbi Rakeffet reflected on the commitment of each one to the eternal values of God and Torah and celebrate their diverse and enduring impact on the Jewish people. Rabbi Rakeffet's inclusive approach is too rarely found in our dialogues and nation. We do not ascribe to a philosophy of maligning others but honoring the Divinity within each one. Each one of these personalities seized a moment in history to elevate and enrich our people.

This message is particularly relevant in light of attempts by the Israeli Chief Rabbinate to unseat Rabbi Shlomo Riskin from his position as Chief Rabbi of Efrat. More details can be found online:

  • http://davidmweinberg.com/2015/05/26/the-rabbinate-is-digging-its-own-grave/,
  • http://blogs.timesofisrael.com/7-reasons-why-rabbi-riskin-must-stay/)

but suffice it to say that Rabbi Riskin, who is beloved in our community, an outstanding spokesperson for Modern Orthodoxy and a leader of thousands over the years, deserves the respect and admiration for his lifetime of dedication to the growth of Religious Zionism, education, Israel and the Jewish people. In the words of David Katz, International Director of Ohr Torah Stone. "To date, the extension of 75-year-old municipal rabbis' tenure for an additional five years has been considered a formality. But Rabbi Riskin - our inspirational and dedicated leader - has been singled out, making it clear that the summons is politically motivated, and based on the Rabbinate's opposition to his "liberal" views on many issues.

To paraphrase Winston Churchill, if you face opposition you should be proud, because it means that you've stood up for something, sometime in your life. Indeed, the Rabbinate's opposition serves to illuminate the ideals for which Rabbi Riskin has been standing his entire life, both in the rabbinate and here, at Ohr Torah Stone: building bridges through tolerance and warmth; striving toward social justice; training modern, relevant spiritual leaders; attaining equality for women in learning and leadership; and making sure that the beauty and significance of Judaism is accessible to all.

Nonetheless, we remain optimistic. The overwhelming wave of support Rabbi Riskin is receiving has been extremely heartwarming and encouraging. It serves to reinforce the justice of our vision and the strength of the movement which Rabbi Riskin has spent his entire life building and serving."

I speak on behalf of our entire shul in calling on the Chief Rabbinate to reconsider its position. Pluralism within Torah represents our united spirit to come together as a nation. We all believe in a God who gave the Torah to us at Mt. Sinai. Let us respect and celebrate our diversity. We stand with Rabbi Riskin and Efrat, pray for peace in Israel and God willing the ability for all of us near and far to harness the power of Torah to being glory and praise to God and every Jew.

Wishing you and your families a Shabbat Shalom

Message from Rabbi Cohen about the Israel Day Parade

  • We are blessed to celebrate the gift of Israel at the Salute to Israel Day Parade on May 31st in New York City. I urge everyone to attend as a spectator or march with BCDS. BCDS' spectator spot is east side of 5th between 70-71st. You can sign up by visiting www.bcds.org. Given the tensions in the world today, it is even more important to show your support. Living in America we are fortunate to be able to express our support for Israel freely and proudly. The walk down Fifth Avenue is uplifting! Please make every effort to attend this year. For more information, please contact me directly. Am Yisrael Chai!

Welcome Rabbi Kivi and Emmy Attar and the members of Congregation Brith Sholom Beth Israel from Charleston, South Carolina. They plan to march in the Salute to Israel Parade.

Helping Houston

Dear Friends,

This week the Jewish community of Houston experienced devastating damages as the result of massive flooding. Homes were flooded with upwards of 4 feet of water, and there are people who are quite literally homeless as a result. In addition to the great losses experienced by individuals, the community as a whole is in a state of shock. The collective damages are overwhelming, and the communal institutions have been hurt as well. United Synagogue, the Orthodox synagogue led by my colleague Rabbi Barry Gellman, was damaged terribly and requires major renovation. Rabbi Joseph Radinsky, the Rabbi emeritus, needed to be evacuated from his home in a canoe, and, like many others, is without livable home conditions.

The Jewish community of Houston is strong and resilient, but are going through a very difficult time and therefore need our help. Please consider donating to the relief efforts, as I am doing.

You can make a donation through the Orthodox Union who is also collecting funds for his purpose. https://www.ou.org/giving/houston-relief-fund/ Alternatively you can send a check directly to Houston: UOSH, 9001 Greenwillow street, Houston, TX 77096

We are all part of one family. Please do out best to assist the Houston Jewish community in their time of need. May we share good news in the week ahead. Shabbat Shalom

Rabbi Daniel Cohen
