Lights in Life and in a NYC Taxi

Welcome to Nachum Segal and his family who join us this Shabbat and Pastor Greg Doll, my Elijah Moment Campaign partner, along with his Confirmation class, who are attending Shabbat morning services.

I urge everyone to join us Sunday morning for a stimulating and timely Torah learning with Rabbi Daniel Feldman.

We are in the midst of season of light. Tonight we light candles for Shabbat and Chanukah. What is the take away from the flames of these candles?

I learned from my parents it is our responsibility to keep the flame alive and spread it - to keep the fire burning brightly.

One of my father's close friends, Geoff Frisch, of blessed memory, lived this idea. He was a successful businessman but saw life's experiences as a series of opportunities. He said: "I am not concerned whether someone buys from me or not but whether we connected as two human beings. If I can make someone smile or make a difference in someone's life, then regardless of the material benefit, I know that I am living for eternity."

Of course, we are inspired by such a description. But do we live by this motto?

If we did, the world would be much different. We encounter dozens of people a day but do we make them feel amazing? We keep the flame of Chanukah alive when we pass it along, transforming a moment into an eternal one. For me, this moment occurred recently on Park Avenue at 30 mph in a New York City yellow cab.

As I entered the car on Sunday night, I was confronted with a choice. Do I engage or disengage? Do I keep the flame or share it? I decided to pass along the flame.

I struck up a conversation with the cabbie and he opened up. He shared with me that people think all cab drivers are the same - but they are not. Some drive to make a daily living, some to pay for college, others to provide for their retirement. He expressed his gratitude how Thanksgiving is a holiday for people of all faiths and his pride in earning an NYC High School diploma. Before I left the car, he said: "God bless you." I responded, "God bless you."

I will likely never see this person again. I truly felt that our two lights merged in the car and we generated some more light for the world.

God bless each of you with a holiday of Chanukah that inspires you to keep lighting the lights every day and every night. With God's help, we will all make the world an even brighter place.

Shabbat Shalom and Happy Chanukah!

The purchase of an Israel Bond is a meaningful expression of commitment to the future strength of the State of Israel and helps to build every aspect of Israel's economy, making it both strong and resilient.
