The Timeless and Timely Message of the Rainbow
Who does not love to see a rainbow? They are beautiful! Not long ago, I saw a double rainbow in Stamford after a midday rain and recited the special blessing. https://goo.gl/zxlj4k
Yet, the Talmud teaches that we are not to gaze at a rainbow. Why? Furthermore, when God offers the rainbow as a sign of the eternal promise never again to destroy the world in a flood, he shares a vision. The vision is not of an isolated rainbow, but as the Torah states, "a rainbow amidst the clouds." What is the significance of this image?
When we "see" a rainbow, we see the sun light refracted through a very fine cloud. Normally, a cloud may block the sun's rays but if the cloud is fine enough, the opposite takes place: far from blocking the sun's rays, this fine mist reveals to us their true nature. Normally, we see sunlight as a simple white color, but the rainbow reveals to us that the sun's rays comprise a profusion of scintillating colors - in fact, a rainbow!
This is a metaphor for our material existence. Often, our involvement in material affairs blocks God's spirit. We cannot fully comprehend the spiritual aspect to things. Conversely, when we completely free ourselves of our attachment to the material world, there is a cloudless sky and we see the blinding clear light of Divine judgment.
Rabbi Dr. Asher Meir explains, "There is an intermediate level. The truly righteous person maintains a refined involvement with this world. A Godly person demonstrates that only through measured involvement in this world can we perceive the dazzling spectrum of colors in God's rainbow. The material world can become a lens for revealing God's splendor."
When we gaze at a rainbow and focus on the rainbow itself, we lose sight of the sun and are looking at the cloud! Instead of looking through the mist, we are looking at it.
The message of the rainbow reminds all of us that while we are encouraged and even commanded to see the beauty in the world, we must use this vision to deepen our consciousness that the ultimate source of beauty is in God.
Wishing you and your families a Shabbat Shalom,
Rabbi Daniel Cohen

Wolfsohn Lecture: My Journey from Radical Islamist to Religious Zionist
Kasim Hafeez is a British citizen of Pakistani Muslim heritage. Growing up in a predominantly Muslim community in the United Kingdom, from a young age he was exposed to radical Anti-Western, Anti-Semitic and Anti-Israel ideas on a daily basis. In his teenage years he made a natural progression towards a more radical Islamist ideology, becoming very active in the Anti-Israel movement, calling for Israel's destruction and delegitimizing its existence on campus and beyond. After coming across Alan Dershowitz's book 'The Case for Israel', a book that challenged his fundamental beliefs, Hafeez began a period of research and reflection that led to him visiting Israel for the first time in 2007. Witnessing the true nature of the Jewish state, was a major turning point in his life and changed his perception of Israel forever.

The three topics will be: (1) who am I, and what are my responsibilities as an individual? (2) who am I, and what are my responsibilities in my family?

(3) who am I, and what are my responsibilities in my local community, Jewish people and the world?
