Shabbat Shalom

Shabbat Nachamu always follows Tisha B'Av, the saddest day on the Jewish calendar. We begin seven weeks of consolation as we approach the holiday of Rosh Hashanah.

Yet, how and where do we experience God's comfort? The answer emerges from the words of the Haftorah this Shabbat. Isaiah the prophet calls out, "Be comforted, be comforted my people." Why the double language?

I read recently an insight from Kate Braestrup from her book Here If You Need Me, which reflects our Jewish values. We and others experience God's comfort when we give comfort to others.

When we listen to someone pour out their worries, we are God's ears, listening. When we place a hand on someone's shoulder blade, or offer an embrace, we are God's hands, soothing. When we make food for someone we are God's hands, providing sustenance. And when we offer comfort, we are God's presence, comforting.

There is so much we do and we can do to be the source of comfort. God willing, we will continue to deepen our roles to amplify God's presence in people's lives. Here are the links to join our Making Mitzvah Moment WhatsApp and Speter Friends WhatsApp groups.

We are blessed this Shabbat to host Dr. Mark Trencher, founder of Nishma Research, as our Scholar in Residence. He will be speaking on Shabbat morning at the 10:30 AM shiur, post Sanctuary kiddush and during seudah shlishit. We will also be celebrating the completion of the mishnayot of Tractate Shabbat by the daily Mishna crew at seudah shlishit.

Thank you to Judith Bernstein, new youth chair, for her leadership in spearheading the Kol Nearim Tallis Fundraiser. The deadline is Monday, August 15th. It is a wonderful way to support our youth and celebrate the blessings in our lives.

This Shabbat, we wish tzetchem leshalom to Rachel & Sam Maryles and their children - Brenda, Elisheva and Dov Baer - who are making aliyah. We are proud of them and wish them and their children many blessings on their move and in their new home.

God willing, this Shabbat will be a harbinger of much comfort and, God willing, many joyous occasions in the months ahead.

Wishing you and your families a Shabbat Shalom,

Rabbi Daniel Cohen

Message From Matt Greenberg

Dear Rabbi Cohen,

I wanted to reach out to thank you for your support in helping to promote a collection of food for the Freedberg Kosher Food Pantry on Tish'a B'av. The congregation was very generous, and we received dozens of items that will feed hungry people in our community. What a meaningful way to observe a fast day by asking people to contribute food that they didn't eat that day, but might have. Thank you again for your support and partnership.
