Message
"I am a stranger and a citizen among you". (Genesis 23:4)
These words of Avraham to the inhabitants of Canaan embody the dual role of the Jew throughout the generations. We both live in the world and outside the world. Avraham courageously stood as a majority of one in opposition to the pervasive idolatry of the time. He understood the importance of standing on principle even at personal risk. Had he cowered in the face of external pressures, we would not be here today as the bearers of Torah and the ambassadors of ethical monotheism.
During the exodus from Egypt, the lesson was reaffirmed. God only saved those Jews who were willing to place the blood of the god of the Egyptians on their doorpost. What values are we willing to fight for? It is a question fundamental to the Pesach experience.
Coupled with our particularism, Avraham also declared that he is a citizen of the world. We embrace our role to be engaged in serving as a light unto the nations. We bear a timeless responsibility to repair the world. Judaism comes first but our mission must be harnessed to enrich the world around us.
In this spirit, I invite everyone to join me this Sunday from 3 PM - 4 PM at Stamford Old Town Hall in commemoration of the 375th anniversary of the founding of Stamford. Stamford originated as a settlement by people of faith and Mayor Martin is hosting an event celebrating the role of religious life in Stamford, entitled, "Many Faiths, One Community, Stamford Strong". It is not a prayer service but a historical remembrance and commemoration.
Second, I want to draw your attention to a wonderful company based in Israel, Tikun Olam Makers, (TOM) that embodies this dual message. This week they received a grant from Google as part of its Challenge focused on making the world more accessible for people with disabilities. Click here to learn more at tomglobal.org.
What does it mean for you to be Jew in the modern world? We do not have to choose between being human and being Jewish. May we all possess the wisdom, courage and vision to contribute to the advancement of society while firmly rooted in our historical religious identity.
Wishing you and your families a Shabbat Shalom,
Rabbi Daniel Cohen

Rabbi Cohen's Halacha of the Week - Kashering Utensils for Pesach
CAS will host kashering on Sunday - 9:15 AM - 11:00 AM and Tuesday 8 PM - 9:30 PM
Metal Utensils that have been used for cooking, serving or eating hot chametz may be kashered by cleaning them thoroughly, waiting twenty-four (24) hours and then immersing them, one by one, into a Kosher for Pesach pot of water which has been heated and is maintaining a rolling boil when the vessel is immersed. Please note: we do not kasher pans coated with Teflon.
Utensils undergoing the kashering process may not touch each other on the way into the pot. In other words, if a set of flatware is being kashered for Pesach, one cannot take all the knives, forks and spoons and put them in the boiling water together. They should be placed into the boiling water one by one. Please watch out for utensils that are rusty or difficult to clean properly. Even silverware made of two parts (a handle and a blade, for instance) should most often not be kashered.
Ashkenazim do not kasher Glass Utensils for Pesach. Arcolac, Pyrex, Duralex & Corelle should be treated as glass for kashering purposes. Plastic Utensils are not kashered.
Granite & Stainless steel sinks can be kashered with the following method. Clean the sink thoroughly. Hot water should not be used or poured in the sink for twenty-four (24) hours prior to kashering. It is recommended that the hot shut-off valve under the sink be turned off twenty-four (24) hours before kashering. Kashering is accomplished by pouring boiling hot water from a Pesach kettle/pot over every part of the stainless steel sink. The poured water must touch every part of the sink, including the drain and the spout of the water faucet. It is likely that the kashering kettle will need to be refilled a few times before the kashering can be completed.
Granite and Formica countertops may be koshered by cleaning and pouring boiling hot water over them. (irui) For more information contact Rabbi Cohen or visit our Pesach website at www.cas-stamford.org

Shabbat Table Conversation for Shabbat Hagadol Four Questions: Chametz is our ego and Matzah represents humility. What spiritual chametz do you hope to remove this year? How will your Passover experience be different and how will it recharge your Jewish identity? How will you retell the ancient story in new ways this year? What is your most vivid seder memory and why?
