CAS Annual Dinner - April 10
Our dinner invitations are in the mail. We are blessed with outstanding honorees and I urge everyone to support our most important fundraiser of the year. Sign up and make your dinner and ad reservations for what promises to be a fantastic event. Please return your invitation (it contains the Hebrew name of G-d) along with your response card to the office when you confirm you will be there to celebrate with our honorees.
G-d for President
Last year, our community was blessed to host Rabbi Joseph Telushkin as the Scholar in Residence of Shabbat Across Stamford. G-d willing, this year's event will be just as meaningful and inspiring. We are blessed to live in a community where we can come together across synagogue borders to celebrate Shabbat together. I am proud of the unity in our community and may we go from strength to strength!
I am reminded of the relevancy of Rabbi Telushkin's sermon on the power of words. He focused on the Lubavitcher Rebbe's embodiment of positive speech, a message more current than ever. We are witnessing rhetoric on the presidential campaign trail descending into the gutter. In truth, the smaller the person, the more negative the tone and demeanor. As citizens, no matter the policy, if the messenger espouses hate, it must not be tolerated. Is our country better than this? I believe it is, and will be, but it is a wake up call to elevating the nature of our conversations and culture. The demeaning in debates is a reflection of our own society's incivility and disrespect.
What was the Rebbe's approach? Choose to always communicate positively. The Rebbe would not call the IDF wounded, the army handicapped but call them mezuyanim, exceptional veterans, reflecting on their service. He would not call a hospital a Beit Cholim, house of the sick, but Beit Refuah, a house of healing. As King Solomon reflected, life and death are the hands of the tongue.
G-d willing, our leaders will rise above the temptations to malign and demonize. It is pitiful and a disgrace. We must demand more. Every candidate, every human being must strive to be G-d like. We must model better behavior ourselves. There is no excuse for negative speech. The mark of our humanity and our distinction from animals is G-d's gift of speech to us. Let us use it wisely. Elevate every word. In emulation of G-d, let all of our words bring light to the world.
Wishing you and your families a Shabbat Shalom
Rabbi Daniel Cohen

Rabbi Cohen's Halacha Question of the Week - Warming Food on Shabbat
  • Question: What is the benefit of a "Shabbat Mode" oven? I heard the term "Shabbat compliant". Is that the same?
  • Answer: Shabbat Mode is a feature in many home cooking appliances. Of note, this mode is intended to allow the appliance to be used on Yom Tov but not Shabbat. Star K designed Shabbat mode to address Yom Tov concerns - not to permit placing solid pre-cooked food into a warm oven on Shabbat.

Here is the history and relevant application as noted on the Star K website: In 1997, Whirlpool Corporation approached the Star-K kosher certification agency to create a technology that would allow Shabbat observers to use their appliances. Whirlpool developed and patented the technology in 1998. Star-K certification certifies Shabbat mode and Shabbat compliant appliances.

Shabbat mode includes models that have unique features which insure the ovens will not shut off after twelve hours of continuous operation. In many cases, this mode will prevent the oven light from going on/off as the door is opened/closed. In some models, however, the bulb must be unscrewed or the light left on for the entire period. Under Shabbat Mode, no lights, digits, solenoids, fans, icons, tones or displays will be activated/modified in the normal operation. For these Shabbat Mode models, the set temperature can be raised or lowered on Yom Tov (but not on Shabbos) for cooking purposes at any time, because there is a built-in delay between the request for temperature change and its actual implementation. We will address Shabbat compliant warming methods next week.
Shabbat Table Conversation - Vayakhel The vision and construction of the Tabernacle signify the importance of seeing the big picture amidst the details of a project. Have you every engaged in a seemingly minor endeavor that you thought possessed national significance? Have the frustrating details of a project ever prevent you from competing it? How can you stay motivated?

Dr. Dovid Katz: The Old Hebrew -Yiddish Conflict and Its Ongoing Legacies
Dr. Katz's involvement with Holocaust issues started with his thousands of hours of Yiddish dialectological interviews with survivors from the historic Lithuanian lands and turned to both academic research and public activism when Lithuanian prosecutors began accusing survivors of "war crimes" for having joined the anti-Nazi partisans. He coined the term "Holocaust Obfuscation" to define 21st century East European revisionism and in 2009 founded the web journal DefendingHistory.com which he has edited since.
