Shabbat Shalom

The mystics explain that the weekly Torah portions during this time reflect the themes of spiritual return. Teshuva - Repentance is in the air. For example, the Slonimer Rebbe reveals that the first verse in our portion of Ki Teze describes the journey of the soul descending into this world and waging a battle - Milchama - with the physical inclination. He highlights the unique challenge that each of us possesses to harness our souls to repair ourselves and the world.

Many people are under the impression we blow the shofar only on Rosh Hashanah but in fact we sound the call to arms to awaken us from our spiritual slumber every morning in shul. We should not wait for the new year but should use these days to prepare for the day of judgement and improve our ways.

This coming week is the anniversary of 9/11, a moment in our country when we all took stock of our lives. Unfortunately, with the murder of Steven Sotloff we are again reminded of the urgency and relevancy of the lessons of 9/11. Interestingly, this season and the phenomenon of spiritual awakenings apply and resonate with all humanity.

Please join me this Thursday evening, September 11th at the Ferguson Library (details in bulletin) as I moderate a discussion with clergy of all faiths (Jewish, Christian, Muslim and Sikh) on how we use these stirrings in our lives to grow and develop strategies for leading more significant and meaningful lives.

Wishing everyone a Ketivah VeChatimah Tovah and a happy, healthy and sweet new year,
Rabbi Daniel Cohen

        • Selichot Presentation: Did Noah and Jonah Share the Same Boat? How Similar Stories Say Opposite Things About the Human Soul.  Is it possible for human beings to change? Although we make such resolutions yearly on the soul-searching day of Yom Kippur, do we believe that self-transformation is really possible? To reveal the Bible's complex treatment of this question, we will explore the narratives of Noah and Jonah: two stories that share a remarkable number of themes, words and details. We will see how, despite their similarities, these two ancient stories actually present opposing views on the question of the human ability to change. Discover the surprising ways in which both views remain relevant to the modern reader in search of authentic and lasting inner transformation.
