In Tribute to Elie Weisel, of blessed memory
We mourn the loss of Elie Weisel, a man of great faith, courage and the moral consciousness of the world. In the words of his wife Marion, "My husband was a fighter. He fought for the memory of the 6 million Jews who perished in the Holocaust, and he fought for Israel. He waged countless battles for innocent victims regardless of ethnicity or creed."
I first heard him speak at Emory University in Atlanta as a young child in the 1970's. I remember him reflecting on the danger of a number as large as 6 million. The magnitude must not diminish the tragedy of each human being. Each person is a world unto themselves. We must never become immune to loss of any life and in the face of evil, never lose faith or tire in the fight against it and in the pursuit of peace.
His words, a sampling of his quotes below, serve as a source of inspiration and action in our time. They are guideposts for heralding the messianic age. We wish his family much comfort among the mourners of Zion and Jerusalem and pray that his memory will always be for a blessing.
"Wherever men and women are persecuted because of their race, religion, or political views, that place must - at that moment - become the center of the universe.
We must always take sides. Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented.
The opposite of love is not hate, it's indifference.
There may be times when we are powerless to prevent injustice, but there must never be a time when we fail to protest.
There are victories of the soul and spirit. Sometimes, even if you lose, you win.
When a person doesn't have gratitude, something is missing in his or her humanity. A person can almost be defined by his or her attitude toward gratitude.
I have not lost faith in God. I have moments of anger and protest. Sometimes I've been closer to him for that reason."
Wishing you and your family a Shabbat Shalom and the Jewish people and world a week of good news,
Rabbi Daniel Cohen

Introducing the Shabbat Atria Mitzvah Mission Spreading joy and building community reflects the values of our shul. Our clergy periodically leads pre-Shabbat Friday afternoon programs at Atria Stamford, 77 3rd Street. This year, we are stepping it up and launching the Stamford Atria Mitzvah Mission. The goal of the Mitzvah mission is to enrich the seniors' experience through friendship, song and joy. Join me and Kate & Peretz Cik on Friday, August 19 at 2:30 PM to share the spirit of Shabbat. Whether adults or kids, your presence will enhance the ambiance and ruach. Let me know if you would like to join the Atria Mitzvah mission. Thank you!
Rabbi Daniel Cohen's Halacha of the Week - Milk and Meat
  • Question: I wait six hours between milk and meat. Some people wait less. Where does this come from? Why do we need to wait at all as long as I do not eat them together?
  • Answer: You are correct that the Torah only prohibits eating milk and meat together in a way that their tastes are intermingled. However the Sages extended the prohibition for two prime reasons. 1. Meat may remain in one's teeth. 2. The taste of meat remains in the digestive system. The Talmud speaks of the need to wait until another meal before eating milk after meat. The definition of a next meal is defined by a set amount of time between eating meat at one meal and dairy at the next. Several opinions and customs arose in applying this concept. The most prevalent is Maimonides who states one should wait "like six hours" giving rise to opinions of a full six hours, just over five and half and a bit over five hours. Dutch Jews wait one hour and German Jews wait three hours. Everyone should follow their family custom. If you would like guidance, please contact me.
Shabbat Table Conversation - Korach Is there a voice of Korach within each person? The author of the Tanya states that it is impossible to perform an act of pure giving without intention of receiving something in return. How is it possible to check whether one's behavior is wholly benevolent or mingled with personal concerns?
