Message
This Shabbat, we are participating in Yesh Tikva's "100 Shuls Project" with 99 other synagogues in North America and Australia. Yesh Tikva aims to give infertility a "voice" and to spread awareness in the Jewish community. Too often, infertility is a silent struggle, such that we may not be aware when a friend, family member, or neighbor is suffering.
Yesh Tikva offers a website - www.YeshTikva.org - and the following support services: Fertility Friends, Infertility and Halakha resources, the Mikvah Infertility Awareness Campaign, and a forum for sharing support and guidance. Yesh Tikva is also working to educate the Jewish community about the unique struggles that come along with infertility.
The goal of the 100 Shuls project is to increase sensitivity towards our fellow Jews who dream of becoming parents. In this month of Nisan, we are reminded once again about the integral role children play in Judaism and its observance. The words we hear over and over again, "You shall teach your child" and "You shall tell your children", can pierce like a dagger through the hearts of couples who struggle with infertility. They are a direct reminder of what these individuals want so desperately - a family - but are not able to have at the moment.
Maimonides points out "[The mitzvah applies] even if one does not have a son." Just as he goes out of his way to mention the childless, we too must reassure those who are not yet parents or single that they are not left out of the holiday. Pesach is a holiday of inclusion. We must not forget them. I will reflect on this important topic on Shabbat morning, Yesh Tikha- There is Hope, by enhancing our community understanding and facilitating empathy for those who have not yet been blessed with children.
Wishing you and your families a Shabbat Shalom and Happy Rosh Chodesh,
Rabbi Daniel Cohen
Welcome our new members Hilary and Ari Goldstein
Service Note Code of Jewish law will be at Ari Lieberman's house at 6:05 pm
Rabbi Cohen's Halacha of the Week - Kashering Utensils for Pesach

Recent questions focused on the following utensils. For more information, please contact Rabbi Cohen or visit our website at www.cas-stamford.org, www.ou.org or www.crcweb.org,

Refrigerators and Freezers All parts of refrigerators and freezers must be thoroughly cleaned and washed, including storage bins. The shelves do not need to be covered.

Microwave ovens Microwaves are difficult to kasher as they are generally made with plastic on the inside. Fortunately, many do not heat up the oven walls enough to cause a real concern. Clean the microwave and do not use it for 24 hours. Boil a cup of water in the microwave until the chamber fills with steam and the water overflows from the cup. If the oven is burning hot, the microwave should not be used for Pesach. If it is relatively cool or warm, the oven may be used and has just been kashered. The glass plate should be covered with saran wrap.

Stovetop Gas - The stovetop surface and grates should be cleaned well and not used for 24 hours. The stovetop surface should be covered with foil and the grates can be replaced or burned out in an oven at 550 degrees for one hour. Electric The stovetop surface should be cleaned well and covered with foil. The burners should be turned on until they glow red.

Convection Oven If the convection oven has the self-cleaning feature, it will be sufficient to also kasher the fan. If there is no self-cleaning feature, the entire oven including the fan, while it is circulating, must be sprayed with a caustic cleaner and cleaned well. The oven should then be kashered by turning it on to the 550°F setting for forty minutes.
