"A Letter to the Editor of the Stamford Advocate"

What makes a city great?  We are all blessed to live in a wonderful town with numerous amenities. Stamford is a big city with a small town feel. Yet, sometimes we overlook the roots of our community and the "jewels" in our midst. Last week, our city lost one of our jewels. Rabbi Simcha Schustal, the head of Yeshivah Bais Binyamin on Prospect Street passed away.  The people in a community define the reputation of a city. Rabbi Schustal was one of those select individuals. His knowledge, leadership and humanity reverberated not only in Stamford but worldwide.  When traveling in Israel or other parts of our country and I mention Stamford, the first words are often "Bais Binyomin and Rav Schustal".  With the passing of Rav Schustal, our city has lost a great Torah luminary.  We wish the Bender and Schustal family comfort and may we, as a city, learn from his values and vision to recognize the spark of the Divine in every human being.
