Shabbat Shalom

This Shabbat, Shabbat Chazon, encapsulates one of the most important messages of the upcoming fast day of the 9th of Av. The name of the Shabbat - Chazon, Vision - is taken from the first words of the Haftorah we read from Isaiah and is the final of the "three of affliction" readings. Although the prophet laments the destruction of the Temple, he does not mourn the loss of the building itself but the underlying causes of exile. This distinction portends a sliver of hope for your future. If we can mend our ways and create a world worthy of the rebuilding of the Beit Hamikdash, God willing, we will merit to see it rebuilt in our days. There is a path forward to peace and redemption and we must embrace the Chazon, the Vision, to see it become a reality.

In this spirit, every mitzvah that we do contributes to redemption. Here are three:

  1. Recite Brachot Mindfully. You will see a Bracha Sheet at the Kiddush Table in the merit of the full and speedy recovery of cholei Yisrael and the return of the hostages.

  2. Bring Packaged Food on Saturday night or Sunday to the shul for the Schoke JFS Freedberg Family Kosher Food Pantry.

  3. Harness the Power of Positive Speech - Share Words of Torah, Reflect on the Week's Memorable Moments. Take the No Lashon Hara Pledge

We celebrate Shabbat as usual despite the proximity to the saddest day on the Jewish calendar, but we do chant the beginning of Lecha Dodi and the Haftorah to the tune of Eicha, lamentations. The same shift occurs when reading the Haftorah.

We will hold an early mincha at shul at 6:00 PM. Seudah Shlishit is considered your meal before the Fast. The Fast starts at 8:14 PM. When Shabbat ends at 8:51 PM, recite Baruch Hamavdil Bein Kodesh L'chol to mark the end of Shabbat before driving to shul. We switch to non leather shoes. We will recite the blessing on a flame following Maariv and Eicha. Maariv will be held in the sanctuary at 9:15 PM.

Minyanim will be at 7 AM and 9 AM on Sunday morning. The full Tisha B'Av schedule can be found in the bulletin and online.

As always, the strength of the Jewish people is our belief in the ultimate redemption and never losing hope. This is reflected in the changing of the tunes to upbeat ones. God willing, the visions of rebuilding and redemption will be realized very soon.

Wishing you and your families a Shabbat Shalom and God willing good news in the days ahead,

Rabbi Daniel Cohen
