Shabbat Shalom

Our heartfelt thoughts and prayers are with the families of the five people murdered in Israel. Rabbi Moshe Twersky, Rabbi Cary Levine, Rabbi Avraham Goldberg, Aryeh Kopinsky and Driuze police officer Zidan Saif. The recent terror attack in Israel evoked images of the Holocaust and a tragic reminder of the struggle for peace in Israel and the existence of evil. We mourn with the five widows and 24 new orphans and pray for strength in the days ahead.

How do we respond to such news? Unfortunately, in the past month, we have witnessed acts of terror in different parts of the world and most personally in Israel. This Torah portion of Toldot speaks of the enmity of the nation of Esau against Israel. It still endures. Yet, with the unfortunate increase in terror there is a danger of becoming numb to evil. How do we respond?

Maimonides teaches that a person who considers any tragedy as being random is cruel. We do not know the ways of G-d and will never fully understand the question of good people suffering but we must not just move on with life as if nothing happened. The lives of the families, relatives and community in Har Nof will never be the same and neither must ours. Maimonides explains that tragedy is an opportunity for growth and introspection. Each of us must find ways to deepen our response spiritually, politically and personally. What more can we do to bring light into a world of darkness? How can we speak out to insure Israel's safety? How can we be more engaged in the efforts to secure peace in Israel?

May G-d grant the families much comfort in the days ahead and may we share good news from Israel.
Rabbi Daniel Cohen

Important Notes from CAS

Sing aloud, O Nations...for He avenges the blood of His servants...and atones for His Land and His people. (cf. Deut. 32:43)
Request from the Devastated Widows and their Bereaved Families

Our hearts are broken and melting amidst tears over the spilling of the blood of the martyred heads of our families - may God avenge their death.

We turn to you, our fellow Jewish brethren wherever you may be! Let us all unite in order that we receive Hashem's mercy. Let us take upon ourselves to increase love and brotherhood between people, communities, and diverse groups.

We implore each person to take upon himself at the onset of Shabbat, to sanctify this Holy Shabbat, Parshat Toldot (the eve of the Rosh Chodesh Kislev), to make this Shabbat a day of unconditional love - a day of refraining from divisiveness and arguments, gossip and tale-bearing.  This act will bring about a great elevation of our husbands' souls, slaughtered in sanctification of God's Name, may He be blessed.

May Hashem look down from above, see our suffering, wipe away our tears. and say "Enough!" to our troubles. May we be worthy to witness the coming of the Messiah very soon - amen, amen!

CAS SECURITY

In light of this week's events, the CAS Board of Directors is implementing the following steps:

  • Our Director of Operations has contacted and requested the Stamford Police Department to conduct more frequent patrols of the synagogue area.
  • We are forming a Voluntary Shabbat Security Patrol Committee.  We ask for volunteers to take thirty minute to one hour shifts from 8am to 1pm on Shabbat to stand in the Lobby.  Mitchell Bell has agreed to head this committee.  Please contact him at wizdrbel@yahoo.com to volunteer for this important task.
  • The Strawberry Hill Avenue entrance will be locked on Shabbat.  Please be careful when opening this door to admit people.
  • We will conduct an emergency fire evacuation drill on Shabbat, December 6, to familiarize members on how to deal with a fire emergency.  Locator maps with exit procedures are being posted through the building.  Procedures for the evacuation drill will be announced in advance.  We will also have  a "lockdown" drill at a later date.
  • We currently have security camera coverage at a number of locations in CAS.  Over the next month, we will increase coverage of the building.
  • We have formed a board Security Committee headed by Mitchell Bell and Rebecca Sigman.  They continue to develop plans to improve our security.  Please contact them to join the committee or contribute ideas to improve our security.
