Shabbat Shalom

Our classes are back in full swing beginning this week. Moshe Shapiro will be offering two classes on conversational Hebrew on Tuesday - 10:15 AM for Advanced and 11 AM for Beginners. RSVP here.

We are also excited to be hosting a Life and Legacy Appreciation event on Saturday night, January 7th featuring wine, cheese and live music. If you are not yet a Life and Legacy donor and would like to learn more and attend, please RSVP here and/or contact me or Dan Faizakoff (dfaizakoff@hotmail.com).

This coming Tuesday is the fast of the 10th of Tevet. It is unique. The Beit Yosef quotes the Avudraham who explains that we fast on this day even when it falls on a Friday. We normally do not have fasts on Friday or Shabbat. Why the exception for the 10th of Tevet?

The Chatam Sofer explains that Yom Kippur is the only other case where we fast on Shabbat because we do not fast on Shabbat for past events, but do for future events. It is not a day mourning the past, but a divine decision for the year ahead. Similarly, a fast for a bad dream is permitted even on Shabbat because it prevents a future calamity, God forbid.

He suggests that the fast of Tevet is the day when God decides whether there will be a Tisha B'Av that year. We fast on the 10th of Tevet because it is about the future. If in fact the day portends redemption, it is a day designed to awaken within us the catalyst for transforming Tisha B'Av into a holiday. If the Temple was destroyed because of baseless hatred, this week and Tuesday are days to strengthen our commitment and action to unconditional love. The story of Yosef which we read during these weeks also serves as a timely and timeless reminder for all of us. God willing, we will witness the redemption, peace and unity speedily and in our days.

Wishing you and your families a Shabbat Shalom and an easy and meaningful fast,

Rabbi Daniel Cohen
