Mission Accomplished: Purpose Never Ending
Those who have a why to live, can bear with almost any how.  - Viktor E. Frankl, Mans Search for Meaning.

On the first days of Pesach I explored the distinction between mission and purpose. As I shared, the questions of the wise and wicked son at the seder are almost the same. They both ponder the rituals of the night. Yet, a closer examination reveals that the wicked son sees Judaism as a burden and the commandments as obstacles to navigate. The wise child views the rituals as a roadmap for his relationship to God and mankind. The wicked son focuses on purpose and the wise son on mission.

Your mission is what you do. Your purpose is why you do it. Your mission creates focus. Your purpose drives your passion.

Our seders are now in the past. We ate the matzah, the maror, great food and shared the story. We fulfilled our mission. But let us not forget for what purpose? God redeemed us from Egypt and spared us through the generations not simply to keep us alive but for us to live for a higher purpose. For this reason, we count the omer connecting Pesach with Shavuot.  Our physical freedom enables us to receive the Torah and be a beacon for ethical monotheism to the world.  What can we do during this transition time to reinforce this idea?
  1. Count the Omer. Make every day count for personal growth.
  2. Attend the community programs for Yom Hashoah, Yom Hazikaron and Yom Haatzmaut. They reflect the meta-narrative of Jewish history and our purpose as Jews.
  3. Attend a Torah class, commit to daily Torah study online or in person.
  4. Study Ethics of Our Fathers - The Road to Godliness is through Menshlechkeit.
As Fyodor Dostoyevsky states, The mystery of human existence lies not in just staying alive, but in finding something to live for.

As we approach the final days of Passover, reflect not only on the mission accomplished but on your purpose for being alive today in 2016 as a Jew. How will you grow every day? How will you realize the Divine potential latent in you to serve our peoples purpose as light unto the world?

Wishing you and your families a Chag Kasher Vesameach and Shabbat Shalom,
Rabbi Daniel Cohen

Eruv Tavshilin Reminder Don't forget to make an Eruv Tavshilin before the Chag begins. In order to allow foods prepared on Pesach to be eaten on the shabbat immediately following the festival, the Jewish law requires an Eruv Tavshilin to be made. This entails preparing two foods, reciting the bracha for Eruv Tavshilin and reciting the paragraph that accompanies the bracha. The two foods are then put away and eaten at the Shabbat day meal. To learn more, visit http://www.eiruvtavshilin.com/
Rabbi Cohen's Halacha of the Week - Chametz after Pesach A prohibition exists to benefit from Chametz owned by a Jew during the holiday of Passover. This is the reason for the arrangement to appoint me as your agent to sell chametz in your possession prior to the holiday. The sale was conducted on Erev Pesach and final through the payment of a deposit on the value of the chametz. However, the agreement stated that the buyer must present the remainder of the payment by 9:00 PM on Saturday night, April 30th. If he does not, the sale becomes null and void from that moment onwards and you are able to eat the chametz you sold. Unless you hear otherwise by 9:00 PM on Saturday night, you can assume the non Jew who purchased your chametz during Pesach did not present the money owed and you may partake of Chametz sold in your home after 9:00 PM. Please note if a store is owned by a non Jew, there is no need from a sale of chametz. All of the establishments under Jewish ownership in our community executed Chametz sales and buying from them is permitted after Pesach including Soosh, 613, JCC, Stop and Shop, Fairway, and Abel Caterers. If you have any questions, please be in touch with Rabbi Cohen directly.
Timely message from the Bergs
It's that time of year again: our apple tree blossomed just yesterday. Although there aren't many blossoms on it because the landscaper cut it way back last fall, there should be enough blossoms on the tree to be able to make the bracha -- and it's in Nisan and everything! I know this is short notice, but since I also don't know how much longer the blossoms will last, I wanted to at least let you know that you and the rest of the community is more than welcome to "come on down" to 1906 Bedford Street to recite the "Shelo Chisar BaOlamo" blessing that is recited only once a year, just like the very recent "Al Biur Chametz." I'll print out a copy of the bracha for those who don't want to carry an ArtScroll siddur with them and hang it from the tree.
Kol Tuv,
Mike & Debbie Berg
