Shabbat Shalom

We bless the new month of Adar this Shabbat and also begin the first of the Four Special Shabbatot prior to Pesach.

Join us on Friday night for a ruach filled Kabbalat Shabbat in honor of Shabbat Mevarchim and Adar. Rosh Chodesh this coming week will be on Tuesday and Wednesday. We will host a Hamantashen Give Away event next Friday, February 24th in partnership with Beldotti Bakery between noon and 1 PM at the bakery.

We are also blessed to host a pre-Purim party and Purim Seudah. Visit the Events section below to sign up.

Shabbat Parshat Shekalim marks the occasion of the collection of the half shekel to replenish the Temple treasury and, in the time of the Torah, to fund the building of the Mishkan. The Midrash offers a cryptic comment about the mitzvah. The Rabbis explain that Moshe did not understand God's command to take the shekel and God showed Moshe a coin of fire to illustrate what exactly should be collected. Why of fire?

The answer is as relevant today as in the time of the Torah. Money, like fire, possesses the potential to be helpful or hurtful. Used properly, fire can cook food or provide heat. However, fire can go out of control and burn and destroy. The same applies to money. It can be used as a vehicle for good, but too much devotion to it can lead to a person's downfall and destruction.

In this spirit, I heard an important piece of advice recently. Never develop too strong an attachment to material possessions. If we do, when we lose them, we will feel as if we have lost a part of ourselves. This will lead to anger, frustration and sadness. Rather, attach yourself to giving, attach yourself to Torah and attach yourself to mitzvoth. Investment in these areas are truly eternal and will yield life long happiness. They can never be lost.

In this spirit, we have numerous opportuntities for Tzedakah upcoming. First, please take a moment to contribute to the Purim Charity Fund to fulfill the mitzvah of Matanot L'evyonim.

Second, support the annual Youth Purim Fundraiser. We are blessed with an amazing youth team, lay and professional and your investment insures the vitality of our programming.

Finally, join us and support our Annual Dinner, which is one month away. This is our most important fundraiser of the year.

Wishing you and your families a Shabbat Shalom and Adar filled with much simcha,

Rabbi Daniel Cohen
