Shabbat Shalom
"You turned my wailing into dancing; you removed my sackcloth and clothed me with joy, that my heart may sing your praises and not be silent. Lord my God, I will praise you forever."
These words from King David, Psalm 30, that we recite every morning embody the spirit of this time of year. We mourn on Holocaust Memorial Day and Israel Remembrance Day. Yet, we celebrate Israel Independence Day and in a few weeks, Yom Yerushalayim, the day marking our return to Jerusalem after thousands of years. The most heartfelt times of happiness in our lives emerge from emotional turnabouts when we move from tears of sadness to tears of joy. In the crucible of grief, we sometimes cannot even imagine how we will move on, but somehow we discover strength, fortitude and hope.
King David reminds us that on the day we experience that salvation, we must rejoice. As he writes in Psalms, "This is the day God has made, let us rejoice and be glad in it." I share this idea because in 2016, with all of the challenges our nation, Israel and the Jewish people face, we must also realize the blessedness of our historic generation. We must sing and not be silent.
In the aftermath of 1948 and 1967, the excitement of our return was palpable but should not be less so today. We must sing and not be silent. How do we sing to God? How do we not remain silent? Renew your commitment to the state and people of Israel. Do not take Israel for granted. It is each of our responsibility to insure her future. Make an effort to be more engaged in expressing solidarity for Israel. This is our time and our moment.
Important dates and events are listed below.
