Our Cosmic Heartbeat
Will you be joining us for dinner on Friday night, March 3rd and Sunday night, March 19th?
These two events - Shabbat Across Stamford on March 3rd and our annual CAS dinner on March 19th - embody the cosmic heartbeat, a timeless message from this week's Torah portion of Beshalach.
In a state of euphoria, the Jewish people sing to God in praise of the historic salvation at the Red Sea. The Torah records that Miriam led the woman in song to the beat of drums. Why this instrument?
My father, a lifelong drummer, most notably in the band, Matzah, suggested to me that the most elemental beat of the drum reminds us of the beat of the heart. The heart is the physical and emotional engine of the body. The rhythmic, repetitive pounding of the drum connects us to our own heartbeat, which sustains us and enables us to live and enjoy the world. Drumming with others, as Miriam did at the sea, connects us to other people with whom we we share a cosmic heartbeat.
The men were impressed and overwhelmed by the sheer magnitude of the miracle. However, the women, who sang accompanied by drums, saw something more. They reminded everyone that the heartbeat of the Jewish people was restored after the dark years of slavery and now they stood poised for growth, the receiving of the Torah and entering the promised land.
It is no coincidence that the reminder of our cosmic heartbeat precedes the moment at Mt Sinai when we stood as one people with one heart. We live in a polarized world and we often forget the most elemental bonds that unite us.
In Stamford, we are blessed to be one of the few communities in the country who celebrates Shabbat Across America across denominational divides. Our Shabbat Across Stamford, an evening when we light candles as one and share Shabbat dinner as one, reaffirms our commitment to Klal Yisrael, the unity of the Jewish people. To learn more about this important event spearheaded by our local UJF, visit https://goo.gl/tqvTIw.
The CAS Annual Dinner crystallizes the heartbeat of our wonderful synagogue and is truly the highlight of the year. We are blessed with outstanding honorees, who reflect the multifaceted and dynamic contributions of our diverse and inclusive membership. I am always inspired by how many of our members give back to our to our shul through their time, talents, wisdom, and generosity. I urge you to join and support this extraordinary evening in tribute to our honorees and in celebration of our mission. To learn more, visit https://goo.gl/nkgpX4.

  • MIKVAH NEWS: A few months ago, we secured Dena Block as our Steinmetz, Bernstein, Alexander Yoetzet Halacha. We thank Liba & Steven Steinmetz, Darona & Rabbi Tzvi Bernstein, and Adrienne & Michael Alexander for establishing the new Yoetzet Halacha program at CAS. Thank God, she is well received and supporting women in our community. She visited the community in November for a session on "All the things you want to know but are afraid to ask." and continues to be available for consultation via her email or phone at blockdena@gmail.com 201 921 8992. God wiling, Dena will return later in the year to Stamford for a visit. What is a Yoetzet Halacha? A yoetzet is a woman educated extensively in the laws of niddah, Jewish family law. Her education also includes other areas that come up when helping women keep the laws of niddah, specifically, medical and psychological issues--for example, fertility and infertility, menopause, pregnancy, nursing, breastfeeding, PPD and contraception. Nishmat, an institution of higher women's learning in Jerusalem, established the Kerel Ariel Yoetzet Halacha training program in 1997 in Israel. Dena Block is part of the first group to be trained by Nishmat in America. Dena works in partnership with Rabbis Cohen and Zweiter and the Minnie Manger Marcia Leiberman Mikvah committee to help women and families in the Stamford Jewish community.
