Shabbat Shalom

Solidarity with the French Jewish Community
Join us this Tuesday, Feb. 10th at 7:30 PM at Agudath Sholom - Please share.

Never Again? Just over a month ago, the world witnessed the brutal attack of four Jews in a kosher supermarket in Paris. They were among 17 people killed in three days of attacks by radical Islamists. The outcry was immediate and led to the expressions of solidarity by world leaders. The shock and horror were felt worldwide.

Yet, a month later as the emotions subsided and faded into memory, the violence continues. This past Tuesday, three French soldiers protecting a Jewish community center in Nice were attacked. The French community is reeling. The question we must ask ourselves is whether French Jewry remains in our hearts and minds? Do we bear their pain and maintain our resolve?

In the aftermath of the attack, we truly felt as one people with one heart. We can all identify other such moments in history - during the Six Day War, rallies for Soviet Jewry, after 9/11 or this summer in the face of the rockets raining down on Israel.

Herein lays the challenge. A unity generated by adversity is short lived. When the threat subsides or the shock wears off, we succumb to ego, partisanship, private agendas and malaise. Yet, the revelation at Mt. Sinai reveals that sustainable unity emerges from common goals and humility before God and man. When we unite around Torah, shared national responsibility and love, we will thrive. The choice is ours.

In this spirit, we are hosting an evening of reflection in conjunction with the Stamford JCC and United Jewish Federation of Greater Stamford, New Canaan and Darien. in memory of the victims of the terror attacks in France The event will be on Tuesday evening, February 10th at 7:30 PM at Agudath Sholom and will consist of prayers and reflections from representatives of French Jewry, the ADL, the Israel consulate and others. Please attend this important event and encourage your friends as well. Furthermore, please take a moment to sign a letter thanking Prime French Minister Valls for condemning anti-Semitism and calling on all European leaders to do the same. http://www.adl.org/sp/condemn-european-anti-semitism/.

Wishing you and your families a Shabbat Shalom

Kashrut Corner with Rabbi Cohen

Each week I will share a kashrut question of the week. Email yours to rabbicohen@cas-stamford.org.

In the coming weeks, we will explore briefly some brachot questions related to our kosher establishments.
Q: Rabbi, at Navaratna, many of the foods are rice based. What is the blessing?

A: Rice is exceptional. Like a grain we recite the bracha of mezonot prior to eating but, unlike grains,  the after blessing is boreh nefashot. Enjoy!

Important Note

Dear fellow Congregants,

I would like to thank all of those who participated in this week's Special Meeting as well as those who voted by proxy. 47% of the membership voted for option D. This option endorsed the board of directors commitment to pursuing the security measures already approved at the last board of directors meeting without hiring an armed or unarmed guard and not joining the Community Service Security Organization. According to our constitution a majority vote of greater than 50% is required to have passed the motion. After considerable discussion at the meeting a motion was passed to adjourn the meeting and to clarify in a future ballot that the measures outlined in option D have already been passed by the Board of directors and are being implemented. We will be notifying the Congregation of a second meeting that will be scheduled in the near future to revote on this very important issue.
