For years, anti-semitism has been on the rise in Europe. Two years ago, three Jewish children and their teacher were among seven people murdered by a French Islamist in Toulouse. Months ago, a French jihadist was accused or murdering four people in a gun attack at the Jewish museum in Brussels and last month a woman was raped in an anti semitic attack in the Paris suburb of Creitel. Unfortunately, the attacks continue. This past week a rally was held in France of Muslims, Christians and Jews to decry the rise in anti-semtism. Yet, when will the terror stop? Now, our hearts are torn as terror stuck 12 people at a French newspaper. We mourn with the families, France and offer comfort and strength. Yet, this incident reminds us that in a world of anarchy, no one is safe. In a world of tyranny, the Jews may be the first target but are not the last. Hate that starts with Jews never ends there. As a student at Yeshiva University, I studied with Rabbi Abba Bronspigel, a Holocaust survivor. Every year, when we read the beginning of the book of Exodus, he would compare Pharaoh's final solution to Hitler. He warned us to remain vigilant. In our generation, radical Islam threatens the world. As Jews, we must do whatever we can to partner with Jews, Christians or Muslims to fight against intolerance and hate. Israel's enemies are America and the modern world's enemies. This is our generation's challenge and G-d willing, we will rise to the occasion. I spoke at length on this topic on the first day of Rosh Hashanah in the sermon "In Defense of Man" which can be found on my website www.rabbidanielcohen.com This Shabbat, we are hosting our annual education Shabbat and welcome Rabbi Yotav Eliach and Rabbi Eliezer Rubin. The theme will be "Integrating Israel into the Curriculum". The timing could not be more appropriate. I will be not be delivering a sermon this Shabbat but rather encourage everyone to attend the panel discussion at 12:15 PM following kiddush. Finally, thank you to everyone who is supporting our annual youth fundraiser next Saturday night and if you have not yet signed up, please do so.
