Give Chizuk: Provide Strength
In one word, the Torah encapsulates the essence of being a Jew. When enjoining a person to support the impoverished, God does not mandate giving money alone but mandates strengthening a person. Giving Chizuk. The Torah states, "If any of your brethren becomes poor and cannot support themselves, strengthen them as you would a stranger in your midst." Leviticus 25:35
The mitzvah includes not only tzedakah, but suggests a broader approach to fostering a holy community. Rashi explains the use of the word "Chazak" through a telling metaphor. Imagine you see an animal with an unstable load. One person can shift the weight to insure the package does not fall. However, once the load falls off the animal, it may take five times as many people to pick up the package from the ground. Rashi explains that it is easier to help someone at the first sign of struggle, rather than wait for a moment of crisis.
Do you do acts of kindness or are you a kind person? Do you wait or anticipate?
The parsha of Behar offers a vision for an idealized society. The mystics and Talmud teach that the world contains enough resources for human prosperity. However, our inability to share and harness our wealth is the obstacle to broader blessings. In this spirit, I will explore the Jewish perspective on income redistribution on Shavuot. More immediately, though, is to remember that one of the most effective ways of helping people meaningfully is to give them chizuk. Offering encouragement, education, financial support, and serving as a conduit for God's blessings fosters a society where everyone can realize their potential, peace and prosperity.
Opportunities abound. Look for them. I just learned of a wonderful initiative from the UJF Women's Philanthropy Division called "3 Square." The goal is to provide supplemental nutrition to students in need in our community. In anticipation of summer, we can all join to ensure kids have items they can use for the summer, such as sun tan lotion, sun glasses and more. See the details on page 2 for more info. Bring your items to a box in the shul lobby. Also, we hosted a great chesed meeting this week and will feature a weekly blurb with Chesed opportunities in our community. To learn more, contact our Chesed Chair, Alisa Weiser alisaweisser@gmail.com or Meredith Cohen at meredithcohen123@gmail.com.
Do not wait but anticipate. Offer chizuk and strength to everyone you meet. As God brings light and life, so must we.
Wishing you and your families a Shabbat Shalom,
Rabbi Daniel Cohen

3 Square - Provide Summer Items for Kids In Need 3 square is a program of the Women's Philanthropy of United Jewish Federation. We provide supplemental nutrition to students in need in our community. Once a week, volunteers gather to shop, package and deliver food to 28 hungry children at Rogers School in Stamford. Our mission is to change lives by providing food for children at risk of going hungry over the weekend during the school year. Periodically the group gives special gifts to mark holidays and vacations. Summer vacation is fast approaching, and we would like to send the kids on their way with some goodies that they can most certainly use this summer, and won't be able to purchase on their own. Please consider donating the following items: full size Shampoo, Conditioner, Sun Tan Lotion, and fun items for Summer, sun hats, sun glasses. For more info, contact Rebekah Raz at rebekah@ujf.org
