Shabbat Shalom

Diane and I will be celebrating, God willing, Tamar's wedding to Feivel Segelov in Israel in the weeks ahead. Please join us virtually.

We will also be launching a new class on conversational Hebrew with Moshe Shapiro at the shul at 11 AM on Tuesdays. See the website for more info.

What inspired Rabbi Meir Shapiro, founder of Daf Yomi, to launch the movement in 1923? At the time, the leading Lithuanian Yeshiva leaders were deeply opposed to encouraging people to learn one Daf a day because they thought it would diminish deeper learning, "iyun". Never could he have imagined that almost 100 years later hundreds of thousands of people would study Daf Yomi over the years and stadiums would be packed for the siyum celebrations.

I believe his inspiration may have been from an insight he shared on this week's Torah portion. In response to Avraham's query about the future of the Jewish people, God takes Avraham outside and asks him to count the stars. Rav Meir Shapiro asks why God asks him to count all of the stars which is truly an impossible task. Rav Shapiro explains that God was calling on Avraham and all of us to remember that even if something seems impossible, we still have to try to create whatever is possible within our power. In the realm of spiritual pursuits, even when someone discourages us telling us our goal is impossible, we must try because we never know how the initial inspiration and act will flower.

This was Rav Meir Shapiro's inspiration in 1923. He was the only survivor in his family after the Holocaust, his famed Yeshiva Chachmei Lublin was no more, but his legacy endures. A lot of people rejected his vision. But he said, "Let us unite the Jewish people and organize a practice of daily daf learning." He never could have imagined in his wildest dreams of the success of Daf Yomi. God willing, we will embrace his spirit and God's message to Avraham each and every day of our lives.

Wishing you and your families a Shabbat Shalom,

Rabbi Daniel Cohen
