Notice
Coronovirus Update
We have made the difficult decision to close the synagogue for all minyanim including Shabbat, classes and gatherings. There should be no house minyanim and people should daven individually. Further, people should limit gatherings for Shabbat meals. As adults, we need to set an example for our children and limit social interaction. The shul will only be open for office staff and construction only.

The Minnie Manger Marcia Lieberman Mikvah will remain open. We are asking everyone to do all their preparations (bathing and showering) at home. Women under mandatory quarantine or who are experiencing symptoms of illness may not use the mikvah. The Men's Mikvah will be closed.

Definition of Success

An ancient practice reveals a timely and timeless message.

In the Parsha of Vayikra, we read about the olah, the free will offering. Depending upon a person's financial resources, one could give an animal, bird or flour. In God's eyes all contributions were equally important. After each offering the Torah states it evoked a Re'ach Nichoach, a pleasant smell. (See Rashi 1:17)

This idea is further amplified in another ritual. When offering the bird, the Torah states, "he shall insure the feathers are intact". (1:17). Rashi explains that even though the feathers were foul smelling, they were not removed from the bird in sensitivity to the poor person so that his offering would not look scant or insignificant.

Rabbi Joseph Soloveitchik broadened this idea by quoting the following Talmudic statement: The Rabbis of Yavneh said, "I am God's creature and my fellow is God's creature. My labor in the city and his labor is in the field." (Brachot 17a)

Rabbi Soloveitchik expounds that the Rabbis understood that their mission was of equal value to theIr brethren who worked in the fields. In the words of the Rav, "The relative significance of one's assignment does not depend on the specifics of the mission or how much he/she completes. Rather, whole hearted acceptance and the will to carry out the assignment are all that matter. Holiness is not associated with perceived success but effort. Man is not judged by his accomplishments but by the devotion and sacrifice though which he pursues his mission."

I am inspired by these words especially during the current situation. Our lives are upended and we are assuming new roles every day. New days bring new challenges. Yet, I have seen how so many of us have not lamented our fates but forged a new realities and destinies. So many thank God, are doing their utmost not to measure success in their accomplishments but in putting forth their best efforts to bring blessings and find new light.

May God continue to give each us the motivation to transcend to deepen our faith, strengthen our communities and mobilize for more acts of kindness. We are here to help you as you prepare for Pesach and although the season will be different, I pray we can all find joy, meaning and healing for all.

Wishing you and your families a Shabbat Shalom,

Rabbi Daniel Cohen

10 Updated Tips for Shabbat
  1. Reach out to someone older or under quarantine. Let them know that they are not alone and that you are thinking of them.
  2. Print out a Torah idea today to share at the Shabbat Table. Here are four excellent resources: www.ou.org, www.aish.com, www.chabad.org, www.yutorah.org
  3. Pick up the phone. Think of some of the people you would normally see over Shabbat and speak with them. Join our Making Mitzvah Moments Whats App to mobilize to help people in need.
  4. Sing. Join Ruach and Renewal at 5 PM Friday with Rabbi Cohen and Jonathan Cahr on FB Live. Join us for a dial-in Kabbalat Shabbat and sing with us. We'll call in at 6:40pm and start promptly at 6:45 pm. Please call 605-475-6777 and enter 51122006# when prompted.
  5. If we can't daven together literally, let's at least daven together at the same time. We'll start our davening at home at 9am.
  6. Please recite this special Tefillah for the victims of the coronavirus. Keep those sick people in mind and add any names.
  7. We won't hear the parsha read in shul this week, but we will still have the opportunity to read it ourselves. This week we begin the book of Vayikra. Interestingly, Judaism teaches that this is the first book to teach young children. Why? (Check out my Parsha Perspectives Podcast for an approach)
  8. This Shabbat is the first one during the month of Nisan. Pesach is around the corner. Spend some time on Shabbat learning new insights in the Haggadah to share at our seder. Please note we do not recite Tachanun nor Avinu Malkenu (added during the current crisis) the entire month of Nisan.
  9. Dress for Shabbat. We won't be in shul, but we can still accord Shabbat the dignity and kavod it so richly deserves by dressing as if we were going to shul.
  10. Think about someone you miss seeing in shul. Make a mental note to call him/her after Havdalah.

Kelim Bill of Sale administered by the Beth Din of America Special thanks to Rav Willig, Segan Av Bet Din, and Rav Shlomo Weissmann, MenahelUnder Jewish law, metal and glass utensils (kelim) previously owned by non-Jews must undergo immersion in a mikvah. This form was created by the Beth Din of America to allow individuals who do not feel comfortable utilizing a kelim mikvah during the COVID-19 pandemic to sell kelim to a non-Jew and borrow them back to use for themselves. Since kelim owned by a non-Jew do not require immersion in a mikvah, this process allows for the use of the kelim without immersing them. This form is primarily for kelim intended to be used prior to the onset of Pesach. For kelim that will not be used until yom tov begins, it is preferable to include them in the sale of chometz to a non-Jew that is more commonly performed. The form below is legally binding as a situmta (halachically valid instrument due to its secular law validity) and supplemented by a cash downpayment (kinyan kesef) of at least a perutah (two cents) per person that will take place periodically during the period leading up to Pesach on Thursday, 3/26 at 8:00 pm (for all forms submitted by 6:00 pm on 3/26), Sunday, 3/29 at 8:00 pm(for forms submitted between 3/26 at 6:00 pm and prior to 6:00 pm on 3/29), and Wednesday, 4/1 at 3:00 pm (for forms submitted between 3/29 at 6:00 pm and prior to 4/1 at 2:00 pm). The proceeds of the sale will be held in trust for you by Rabbi Shlomo Weissmann (menahel of the Beth Din of America). Once you have signed the form below, you should not use the kelim until after the occurrence of the next kinyan kesef. The kelim will be purchased back from the non-Jew at a later date. Since this sale mechanism is only to be used bisha'as hadechak (in an extraordinary circumstance) such as the present situation, you should immerse your kelim in a mikvah once it is safe to do so. When the date for the repurchase is established you will be notified by email so that you can properly immerse your kelim in a mikvah at that time.Click here to access the form.

Send a Virtual Shabbat Shalom! Join our Virtual Shabbat Shalom greetings on Friday to our shul. We may not see each other at Kiddush but we can still wish everyone a Shabbat Shalom! Send a 5-7 second video greeting from your family by 9 PM Thursday of each week to Jake Sigman at jsigman04@gmail.com. We will send out CAS Virtual Shabbat Shalom to the shul on Friday afternoon!

Making Mitzvah Moments - Stamford Jewish Community What's App Group
A small act of kindness can change the world of one person. Join our Making Mitzvah Moments (MMM) group to assist people in our community. Whether for a shut in, the elderly, someone who is sick or others, there are small ways we can help and uplift each other. Here is the link

Here is how it works. MMM will be posted through Schoke JFS and other organizations as a resource of people in need. The post will have contact numbers for clergy in community. When the clergy or a member of the group knows of a request, they will post on what's app group for volunteers to respond to the call!

God willing, together as a community we can strengthen our bonds to each other and transform times of sadness and loneliness into renewed spirit and light.

Check out a Feature on Channel 4 WNBC and this moving clip from the Today show on NBC this morning (about 50 seconds in). May hashem continue to bless us to rise up!
Covid Update
COVID-19 Updates

We hope and pray for good news of health and healing in the weeks ahead. Please note the following updates. Below is a letter from our community leaders about supporting local establishments.

There are special considerations for this year in preparation for Pesach. For the most up to date information, please visit our Pesach website or reach out to Rabbi Cohen or Zweiter for specific questions.

We understand the angst particularly for someone saying Kaddish or on a Yahrzeit. Therefore we recommend the following:
  1. As a community service, Aish Haftorah in Israel who have a minyan will keep your loved one in mind for Kaddish. Please send names to Rabbi Cohen.
  2. Studies for the Soul - Join our nightly 6:00 PM mishna learning as a tribute to your loved one. (646) 558-8656, code 206547223#
  3. Light a Yaarzeit Candle, Recite Psalm 16 and recite a Kel Maleh privately.
  4. In lieu of Kaddish, you may recite the prayer "Al Hakol" privately which embodies many of the same elements of Kaddish. It can be found in an ArtScroll Siddur Shabbat morning before Torah reading on page 438. Contact Rabbi Cohen for a copy as well.

Do not underestimate the power of prayer.
Join the OU everyday at 1 PM for a call to recite Psalms and hear words of inspiration. The phone number is (773) 249-0370. Whether on the call or not, recite Psalms 20, 121 and 130. Also, check out this innovative way to connect through Tehilim. https://abrahamslegacy.com/

Tzedakah and Financial Support
This is a very trying time for people in our community. If you or you know someone who is in need of financial support for daily needs, please reach out to me. Our communication will of course be confidential and God willing, we can renew your spirit and offer vital support for you and your family. If you are able to contribute to the CAS charity fund, your assistance is needed now more than ever. Please reach out to me as well.

Keilim Mikvah
Please follow the following protocols when using the Mikvah for vessels.

  1. People should wear latex gloves when immersing vessels.
  2. People should wash their hands both before and after using the mikvah.
  3. The surfaces should be wiped down appropriately as often as possible.

Supporting Local Establishments
Please make every effort to support our local kosher and service establishments. They are hurting.  Whether for food, dry cleaning, salons, or other stores, buying gift certificates now, for instance, can be a helpful way to help keep cash flowing and give them strength.
May we share good news in the days ahead and thank you!
