The Joy of Giving

Purim is around the corner. As Adar arrives, we are obligated to increase our joy. Be happy is the mantra. However, Judaism teaches and it has been shown scientifically click here that it is giving, not receiving, that makes us happy. It is no wonder that Purim is a holiday marked by mitzvot of Mishloach Manot and Matanot Levyonim.

In fact, the Rambam writes that we should spend more money on gifts to the poor than on gifts to our friends. In this spirit, if you would like to participate in the mitzvah of mishloach manot, please drop a check at the shul or make a donation online and earmark for Purim. The funds will be distributed locally via our shul and JFS and to needy in Jerusalem.

To learn more about Purim, listen to some of our Purim podcasts or attend one of our weekly classes.
