Shabbat Shalom
From Morning to Night and From Night to Morning

Sometimes a subtle twist of language in the Torah reveals an entire worldview.

When the Torah describes Moshe's leadership, it says that he judged the people "from the morning until the evening"— mi'boker ad erev.

But when it speaks about Aharon's sacred role of lighting the Menorah, the Torah reverses the order: "from the evening until the morning" — me'erev ad boker.

At first glance, this sounds technical. In truth, Rabbi Avraham Schorr explains that it captures two complementary spiritual missions.

Moshe's role begins with boker — morning, clarity. His task was to bring the word of God to the people and to teach us how to receive Torah with humility. To truly receive Torah, one must first learn how to listen.

I once heard a beautiful story from Rabbi David Aaron that captures this. A man was at a chassidic tish, where the Rebbe was giving out apples. When he reached forward to take one, the Rebbe gently motioned for him to open his hand instead. "Don't take it," the message was. "Receive it."

Torah is not something we grab and shape around our own assumptions. It is something we receive with openness, humility, and a willingness to be changed.

But humility alone is not enough.

We are taught that the Torah was given on Mount Sinai because it was the lowest of mountains, a symbol of modesty. And yet, it was still a mountain. The Torah was not given in a valley.

The message is profound: genuine humility must live together with a sense of personal worth. Each of us stands before God not only as a servant, but also as someone who matters, someone with a role, a voice, and a responsibility.

That is where Aharon comes in.

Aharon's work begins in the erev — in the evening, in moments of confusion, doubt, and spiritual uncertainty. His task was to light the Menorah — to ignite the inner light of the people. He helped Jews who may have felt small, invisible, or unworthy realize that their presence, their choices, and their goodness truly count.

Moshe brings the Torah down to the people.

Aharon lifts the people up toward the Torah.

One teaches us how to receive.

The other teaches us to believe that we are worthy contributors.

The meeting point between heaven and earth is not only God coming down to us — and not only us reaching upward to God. It is the encounter between humility and responsibility, between listening deeply and stepping forward courageously.

If we can live with both the openness of Moshe and the confidence inspired by Aharon, we become not only receivers of Torah, but partners in carrying it forward.

With blessings, wishes for a Shabbat Shalom and the full light of the redemption,

Rabbi Daniel Cohen
