Consistently Consistent: Living Your Core Purpose

One of my high school teachers in Atlanta, Rabbi Daniel Estreicher, would always tell me and my friends, "Every word in the Torah is like diamonds and rubies." No phrase is extraneous. This idea has always shaped my approach to learning.

God states in this week's Torah portion of Terumah, "Make for me a sanctuary, I will dwell in them." Notice that the object of the verse is not "it" referring to the sanctuary, but "them" signifying the people. God promises us that if we make space for Him in our lives, dedicate our talents and treasure to him, and give from the heart, he will shower us with his eternal blessings.

Moshe and Aharon embody this message. When God recounts the genealogy of Moshe and Aharon, it repeats their names twice. The verse states, "These were the ones who spoke to Pharoah, the king of Egypt, to take the Jews out of Egypt; this was Moshe and Aharon." (Shemot 6:27) Rashi was bothered by the seemingly superfluous ending of the verse. Why mention the names of Moshe and Aharon again? He explains that the Torah is informing us that Moshe and Aharon were "complete in their righteousness and their mission from beginning to end."

In three words, God is conveying to us the mission of every Jew - to stay true to our values at all times and in all places. It is relatively easy to be inspired to embark on our life purpose at pivotal moments, a life cycle event, and the beginnings of a career, relationship or school. At these times, we have no doubt that we can stay true to our values and passionate in our purpose.

Unfortunately, life gets in the way; we lose focus and get derailed from our purpose. For instance, few people, if any, leave business school with a plan of making moral compromises to earn more money. Over time, a person may compartmentalize their values and justify their actions. This applies in careers, religious life and relationships. The test is whether we can remain authentic and whole. Do we live in sync with our values in private and public? Do we stay committed to choosing every day to lead exemplary lives?

It is not easy. For this reason, we pray every day for strength in this area. We recite the Tefillah (Artscroll page 28) - Leolam Yehe Adam Yareh Shamayim BeSeter Uvagalui - A Person should always be in awe of God whether in private or public. Strikingly, the Talmud relates that Yochanan served as Kohen Gadol for eighty years and subsequently became an apostate. He was a great man, but did not persevere until the end of his life. Sometimes, a hostile spiritual environment will test our religious values. How committed are we to withstand the pressures on our principles and purpose? In the words of management thinker Jim Collins, "A Core Purpose is your reason for being, it captures your soul, with the primary role to guide and inspire. You cannot fulfill a Purpose; it is like a guiding star on the horizon, forever pursued but never reached."

Aharon and Moshe remind us of the challenge to define our ideals and stick with them regardless of the situation. They remind us that true holiness does not reside in a building but potentially in each and every one of us. May we and our children and grandchildren all possess fortitude to remain committed to our religious values every day. May we stay inspired in our mission and passionate in our core purpose.

Wishing you and your families a Shabbat Shalom and God willing an immediate return of the hostages, victory and peace speedily and in our days ahead,

Rabbi Daniel Cohen

Israel Updates
Israel MEALuim Update - Our Support Matters!  To Join the Mitzvah, visit https://tzohar-eng.org/mealuim/

Rabbi Cohen-- Your community's participation in MEALuim has made a significant difference in the lives of IDF miluim families. Especially now, as the war has extended into almost 4 months, the absence of a spouse and parent is even more profound and difficult. The homefront has become one of the more important places where we need to place our support. Overall we have thus far provided over 5000 meals to hundreds of families.Using Tzohar's strong connection we have been able to identify and serve those most affected by their soldier's absence and with limited local support. We have focused on ten yishuvim, and sporadic individual families.15 Agudath Sholom Congregation members participated thus far, donating 418 meals. The recipients of these meals were primarily families in Katamonim Jerusalem, an area with many young men in miluim. Yasher Koach!! Please deepen and expand the support!
