Message
We are blessed this Shabbat to host a Torah scholar, teacher and mensch of the highest caliber. Rabbi Hayyim Angel will be our Scholar in Residence. He currently serves as the National Scholar for the Institute of Jewish Ideas and Ideals. In the words of a Jewish leader, "He is among the best Tanach teachers from whom I have ever been privileged to learn. He has a wonderful way of explaining complex issues in a clear and easy to understand style, and always adds new insights to the text."
We have known each other since college and first met as young students in the Talmud shiur of Rabbi Abba Bronspigel at Yeshiva University. Please join us over the course of Shabbat for his thoughtful and stimulating presentations.
I recently came across a quote from Rabbi Angel that speaks to our values and vision for Agudath Sholom. The quote moved me as it reminded me of why I am a Rabbi and hopefully each of us why we are Jews. What are our goals, aspirations and mission?
When Rabbi Hayyim Angel was still a rabbinical student, he wrote a short statement responding to the question: Who are religious Jews? That statement well reflects ideal Judaism:
"Religious Jews are those whose hearts smile when their mouths do. Religious Jews feel pain in another's misery, joy in another's happiness. They know that perfection is impossible, yet they strive for it. They are trees rooted in the earth with their branches extending towards the heavens. Religious Jews are cisterns who do not lose a drop; they are springs of water which steadily increase. They observe the commandments with an adult's intelligence and a child's enthusiasm. They act in a manner that is a credit to themselves and which earns them the respect of both Jew and non-Jew. They are prepared to sacrifice for God, their people, their laws, and their homeland. Religious Jews are a unified mass of sand, yet individual stars who shine on the world."
These words should be taken to heart by all of us.
We are deeply grateful to Ivy and Marvin Schildkraut for sponsoring our weekend in memory of Sam and Mabel Schildkraut and Frances Medel.
Also, this Sunday morning, please join either our Men's Club event with our own Dr. Joe on his new book "The Man Diet" or our Mikvah event "From Bride to Baby and Beyond: Mikvah FAQS" with Yosetzet Halacha Dena Block.
Finally, warm Mazal Tov to the JCC as they mark the continuation of the 100th anniversary celebration with the Maccabi Torch Run on Sunday morning including a stop at Agudath Sholom. Join the celebration!
We are looking forward to seeing everyone on Shabbat. Wishing you and your families a Shabbat Shalom,
Rabbi Daniel Cohen
