Burial in Israel, Living Will and Halachic Organ Donation

Parshat Vayehi begins with a topic that everyone thinks about but few speak about which is preparation for death. Jacob is on his deathbed and he wants to insure his proper burial and more importantly his legacy. He and his family are warmly welcomed in Egypt. Nevertheless, he knows that his homeland is Israel. He asks Joseph to swear that he will bring him back for burial in Israel. This parsha highlights the significance of burial in Israel.

My mother of blessed memory is buried at Eretz Hachaim in the hills outside of Jerusalem. The decision about burial is an important and sensitive one. For more information about Eretz Hachaim which offers plots in Israel, please see this link: www.eretzhachaim.org.

Beyond burial, we should be mindful of other considerations such as living wills and halachic organ donation. This week, I registered to become a halachic organ donor and encourage you to do so as well. Please see these websites for more information:

These issues are personal and I am available to discuss any or all of them with you. Please be in touch at your convenience.

On another note, Diane and I will be with some of our young families in New York City this Shabbat for our Stamford in the City Shabbaton. Yasher Koach to Jesse and David Brand for organizing this exciting event to develop our shul and community.

Wishing you and your families a Shabbat Shalom

Smoke and CO detectors.

  2. Have your chimney cleaned, including the fireplace flue and linings.
Flammables

  2. Ensure there is proper ventilation if you store gasoline or kerosene in your garage.
  3. Do not store gasoline or kerosene in your basement - EVER.
Electrical
