The Power of One Voice: NPR and Olivia
I speak often about Israel and advocacy. Why? I believe there is so much more we can do and we underestimate the power of our voices. This week offered an inspiring reminder. What can we do to advocate for Israel in the media? We encounter more news stories than ever before with outright bias against Israel whether online or in print.
Thankfully, this week, there was a success story testifying to the power we possess to make a difference. A map featured on NPR replaced Israel with Palestine. Most of us would see this, throw up our hands and lament the bias. Olivia did not. She spoke out and her voice was heard. Take a moment to check out this video www.youtube.com/watch?v=PzTT53iNiao to learn about her story and also visit the Honest Reporting website for the latest in advocacy. honestreporting.com. Sign up for their daily alerts and be in touch with them when you see bias in the media.
There is so much more all of us can do. Stay engaged. On a related topic, consider joining us at AIPAC Policy Conference this year. AIPAC is offering a special one week discount and details are below.
May we share good news this week in our community, our country and in Israel.
Wishing you and your families Shabbat Shalom,
Rabbi Daniel Cohen
Welcome Rabbi Jeffrey Weiss, Assistant Rabbi Candidate, his wife Ilana and their baby Ahuva
  • This Shabbat we will host Rabbi Jeffrey Weiss, candidate for our Assistant Rabbi. Rabbi Weiss will speak Friday night around 5 pm between Mincha and Ma'ariv, and at both services Saturday morning. We will host a community-wide "meet and greet" tea at CAS on Saturday afternoon at 4 pm. Rabbi Weiss will give a class at Seudat Shlishit, around 5:15 pm. We will send out a brief survey Saturday night requesting your feedback about Rabbi Weiss as a candidate for our Assistant Rabbi. Please respond promptly.
  • Rabbi Jeffrey Yaakov Weiss has been involved in almost all components of Jewish leadership as a rabbi, chaplain and educator over the past decade. A musmach of Yeshiva University, he is currently the Mashgiach Ruchani/Assistant Rabbi at Beth Israel Synagogue in Omaha, Nebraska. There, Rabbi Weiss provides pastoral care to congregants, plans large and small programs, teaches and coordinates educational offerings while engaging members of the broad Jewish community in synagogue and Jewish life. He serves as the administrator for the Va'ad Hakashrut of Omaha, Community Mikvah and Eruv, and he is recognized as a judge for the RCA's Rabbinical court for Jewish conversion. Known for his attentiveness to individuals, Rabbi Weiss - along with his wife Ilana and their four young daughters - enjoys hosting the myriad of guests who pass through Omaha as they travel along I-80, as well as welcoming many families and individuals to their Shabbat table each week. A native of Brookline, MA, Rabbi Weiss has fond memories of New England and is excited to spend Shabbat in Stamford.

Rabbi Cohen's Halacha Question of the Week
  • Question: This coming week, we celebrate the beginning of the month of Adar 1, the first of two Adar months as it is a Jewish leap year. However, we do not celebrate Purim until the second Adar. The Talmud teaches the rationale for delaying Purim in order to connect the redemption of Purim to Passover. During which month is a yahrzeit observed? Do the rules of yahrzeit precedence apply in regard to Kaddish?
  • Answer: Interestingly, yahrzeit observance is in the first Adar for one who dies in Adar of a non-leap year, and on that day all yahrzeit precedence belongs to the person observing the yahrzeit. A person should light a candle and say kaddish As such the shul yahrzeit notices remind people of the observance in Adar 1. However, it is customary to recite Kaddish on that day in the second Adar as well, but there is no precedence to lead davening over one who has an actual yahrzeit on that day.

Dr. Dovid Katz: The Old Hebrew -Yiddish Conflict and Its Ongoing Legacies
Dr. Katz's involvement with Holocaust issues started with his thousands of hours of Yiddish dialectological interviews with survivors from the historic Lithuanian lands and turned to both academic research and public activism when Lithuanian prosecutors began accusing survivors of "war crimes" for having joined the anti-Nazi partisans. He coined the term "Holocaust Obfuscation" to define 21st century East European revisionism and in 2009 founded the web journal DefendingHistory.com which he has edited since.
