LIGHTING FRIDAY NIGHT CANDLES EVERY DAY
Beginning in November, a full slate of programming begins including a robust educational program, social events and so much more. Take a few minutes to peruse the weekly and commit to participate in one of the many opportunities. I especially encourage you to attend the Wolfsohn lecture with Kasim Hafeez on Wednesday night, Nov. 9th on the topic "My Journey from Radical Islamist to Religious Zionist". It promises to be a lecture you will never forget!
Also, as our congregation grows it is even more important to build one community. Join us for our Dinner in Motion on Friday night, Nov. 17th for an evening geared towards getting to know each other and making new friends. Click here for more info and to RSVP.
Most importantly, I hope everyone's holiday season went well and God willing, all of our prayers this year will be answered for the good and our dreams and aspirations will come true.
However, this Shabbat reminds us that our goals will only be realized when we partner with God. Prayer must be coupled with action. As I shared on Yom Kippur, the story of Jonah beckons us to engage in the holy mission of elevating ourselves and the world. Not one of us is exempt from this process. Each person's contribution makes a difference.
The Chofetz Chaim expresses this idea eloquently in this week's Torah portion. He writes that God's first act is to create light in the midst of darkness and order out of chaos. We are endowed with the task of emulating God. One ray of light, one mitzvah can illuminate the world. The very act of lighting candles at the onset of Shabbat exemplifies this pledge and mission for each of us.
The story below which I have shared in shul from Rabbi Jonathan Sachs captures this ideal. He is speaking about the influence of the Lubavitcher Rebbe at the gathering of Chabad emissaries in 2011.
"I once heard a beautiful story from a shliach, who had gone to a little town in Alaska, he asked the local town hall, are there any Jews there? They said to him there are no Jews there. So he asked - in order not to go back having not done anything - could he go and visit the local school and give a talk to children? The head of the school said fine. He went in to a classroom in this little town in the middle of Alaska - and he said, "Children, have any of you ever met a Jew?"
And one little girl put up her hand and she said, "Yes."
And he said, "Who?"
And she said, "My mother."
He was thinking to himself, "What do I say to this girl?" She's the only Jewish child in this school, this is the only Jews in the entire city, I have to go, and there is no way I can get them to leave and come to a place where there are Jews. What can I say to this girl now that will lead her to stay Jewish?
And this is what he did; he asked her every Friday afternoon to light Shabbos candles. He said, "I don't know if you know this, but Alaska is the most westerly place in the world where there are Jews, it is the last place in the world where Shabbos comes. And when every Jew lights Shabbos candles they bring light and peace to the world. So every Shabbos the whole world is waiting for your Shabbos candle - the last of all to be lit."
Can you imagine what that did for that child? He could have said, what are you doing in middle of nowhere where there are no Jews? Instead, in the most beautiful way, he made her feel important. She had a task to perform for the whole Jewish people, for the whole world. By showing people greatness they did not know they had, he showed people what they could become."
Wishing you and your families a Shabbat Shalom,
Rabbi Daniel Cohen

Wolfsohn Lecture: My Journey from Radical Islamist to Religious Zionist
Kasim Hafeez is a British citizen of Pakistani Muslim heritage. Growing up in a predominantly Muslim community in the United Kingdom, from a young age he was exposed to radical Anti-Western, Anti-Semitic and Anti-Israel ideas on a daily basis. In his teenage years he made a natural progression towards a more radical Islamist ideology, becoming very active in the Anti-Israel movement, calling for Israel's destruction and delegitimizing its existence on campus and beyond. After coming across Alan Dershowitz's book 'The Case for Israel', a book that challenged his fundamental beliefs, Hafeez began a period of research and reflection that led to him visiting Israel for the first time in 2007. Witnessing the true nature of the Jewish state, was a major turning point in his life and changed his perception of Israel forever.

The three topics will be: (1) who am I, and what are my responsibilities as an individual? (2) who am I, and what are my responsibilities in my family? (3) who am I, and what are my responsibilities in my local community, Jewish people and the world? This is a great opportunity for fathers and sons to bond and grow in preparation for their Bnai Mitzvah.
