Shabbat Shalom

As we are all hoping and praying for good news from Israel, God willing, in the days ahead, I was struck by the confluence of one of the overarching messages of Sukkot and this moment in time. One of the primary themes of the holiday is Jewish unity. When the chag is introduced in the Torah it is not simply about the mitzvah of sitting in the sukkah but the Torah states -

Vaykira 23:42 - All citizens of Israel should sit in the sukkah

Unlike the mitzvah of taking the four species which is a personal one, the idea of sitting in the sukkah symbolized the notion of recreating the tents of Avraham and Sarah, open on four sides where everyone is welcome.

The Sukkot festival represents the culmination of the three festivals and a time of great abundance of the Jewish people. However as the Talmud teaches, there is no greater vessel for blessings than peace. As a nation and Jewish people, we have struggled immensely since October 7th, 2023. The crisis forged bonds of unity among the Jewish people. As we anticipate news of the end of the war and return of the hostages God willing, we pray that we celebrate and fuel even greater unity now and in the years ahead.

I was struck by these words written a day ago by Natan Sharansky's daughter Rachel as she walked the street of Israel in the aftermath of the hopeful news,

"When I met your eyes in Israel's streets today, I didn't experience our differences as alienating. I wasn't looking to see who shares my own response and who does not. I looked into your eyes because I wanted to show you that I care about you. Whatever you feel today: your hope or joy or fear or grief or pain or worry – I see it, I see you, and while I can't always understand, I want to try. You – we – don't have to carry our separate feelings on our own.

We lived through a cataclysm, and here we are, still together, almost, maybe, on the other side. Our difficulties aren't over. Our future isn't free of painful challenges. The ones we lost will not come back, and our disagreements won't come to a sudden end. But I pray that we can make space for one another, for our battered hearts and complicated feelings, and hold the weight of this complexity together. I pray that we can walk through this day hand in hand, with love and caring. And I pray that in doing so, we can become a birthplace for the softer future we can share."

May her words be ones we all live by each and every day.

Wishing you and your families a Shabbat Shalom, Chag Sameach and news of a full redemption for the people and state of Israel speedy and in our days.

Rabbi Daniel Cohen

Sukkot Wind Safety Guidelines With forecasts of winds exceeding 20 mph on Sunday and Monday, please review the following halachic and safety guidelines (adapted from guidance by Rabbi Kenneth Brander and Rabbi Herschel Schachter):
  1. While winds of 20 mph generally do not pose a serious risk of a sukkah collapsing or becoming airborne, if you believe your sukkah is not sturdy enough to withstand such winds, it should be dismantled to avoid any potential danger.
  2. If there is concern that the s'chach might blow off due to the wind, it may be tied down securely on Sunday or Monday before Yom Tov, even using plastic cable ties.
  3. If the s'chach needs to be replaced or tied down on Yom Tov itself, this may be done by a non-Jew.
  4. If there is a realistic concern that the s'chach could fall during the meal, one should not eat in the sukkah.
If you have any questions please contact Rabbi Cohen (rabbicohen@cas-stamford.org) or Rabbi Roberts (rabbiroberts@cas-stamford.org)
