The Big Three: Freedom, Memories and Courage - Getting Ready for Pesach

There is so much to learn and enjoy at the Seder. However, in the hustle and bustle, sometimes we neglect foundational ideas. Here are three for reflection.

1. Freedom: If Passover celebrates freedom, why do we make the occasion with a seder, an evening of order? After all, there are more commandments in anticipation and during the holiday than for any other festival.

What is the nature of the freedom we commemorate? How does the quote below embody the essence of real freedom and the bridge between Passover and Shavuot? How are you enslaved and how can you become free?

"I have on my table a violin string. It is free to move in any direction I like. If I twist one end, it responds; it is free. But it is not free to sing. So I take it and fix it into my violin. I bind it and when it is bound, it is free for the first time to sing." - Rabindranath Tagore

2. Creating Memories: How is it possible for us to sing in Dayenu that it would have been enough to come to Mt. Sinai, but not receive the Torah? Rabbi Avraham Pam suggests a powerful answer. Imagine walking into a spice shop only to leave without purchasing any spices. You will leave empty handed, but you will be enveloped in the fragrances of the store. The experience will stay with you.

The prime goal of the Seder experience is creating a memory for eternity. I do not have strong recollections of the words my parents shared with me at our Passover seders, but I will never forget the smells, tastes, joy and that excitement of the holidays.

What can we do to create enduring and positive memories at our seder?

What does this quote signify to you and how does it embody Passover?

"The things we do outlast our mortality. The things we do are like monuments that people build to honor heroes after they've died. They're like the pyramids that the Egyptians built to honor the pharaohs. Only instead of being made of stone, they're made out of the memories people have of you." - R.J. Palacio, Wonder

3. Courage: Are you a thermometer or a thermostat?

Both devices register temperature, but one is influenced by the environment and the other transforms the environment. The redemption from Egypt was triggered by human beings who chose to act courageously for God. Which heroes or heroines in the story demonstrated such courage? Who in your life, family or community served as a model for moving outside their comfort zone for a higher calling and in turn transformed the lives and that of future generations?

"One man with courage, makes a majority" - Andrew Jackson

With prayers for our brothers and sisters in Israel and God willing good news ahead and Wishing you and your families a Shabbat Shalom,

Rabbi Daniel Cohen

His Yahrzeit is Sunday, the day of our annual dinner. Here is a link to my tribute to him when he passed away and some related links: Talmud Lessons on JBS and Rabbi Ehrenkranz Remembered. Pesach Q and A Rabbi Cohen and Rabbi Kurtz manage the CAS Pesach WhatsApp Q and A. It is a great way to learn about Kashrut and Kashering for the upcoming holiday. Click here to join.

Here is a sample question:

May I use my year round hot water urn for Pesach?
If the urn only used for heating water, run hot water through the water tap for 10 seconds, while pouring boiling water from a kettle over the water tap. If it is used to warm food (e.g. to warm challah), it must be put away and not used for the Pesach.
CAS Youth News
CAS Group Update  In Parshat Vayakhel, we learn about the incredible teamwork and generosity of the Jewish people as they came together to build the Mishkan. Moshe calls upon the entire community to contribute their talents and resources, whether through donating materials or offering skills like weaving, crafting, or painting. Everyone had a role, and every contribution was essential in creating something beautiful and holy. This reminds us that each person has unique strengths, and when we work together, we can achieve great things.

The Parsha also teaches us the importance of Shabbat. Moshe emphasizes that even the building of the Mishkan must stop on Shabbat, showing us that rest and spiritual connection are paramount. As the famous saying goes, "As much as the Jews keep Shabbos, Shabbos keeps the Jews." As we work hard and contribute to our communities, we must also take time to rest, recharge, and connect with G-d. This balance between action and rest is essential for a fulfilling and meaningful life. For fun and experiential learning, instead of a parsha-themed snack, we're embarking on a weeks-long "chametzpalooza!" Our theme this week is "eat all the chametz before Pesach!"
Questions for Your Shabbat Table:
  1. How do you think the Jewish people felt when they worked together to build the Mishkan? Can you think of a time when you worked together with others to accomplish something special?
  2. What role did Shabbat play in Parshat Vayakhel, and why do you think Moshe reminded the people to keep it while building the Mishkan?
  3. Why do you think each person in the community had an important job in building the Mishkan, no matter how big or small?
  4. How can we balance our busy lives with time for rest and connection, just like the people of Israel did when they paused their work on Shabbat?
  5. Have you ever heard of a "Technology Shabbat?" What do you think it is, and why do you think it's important for people?
