Remembering Lives of Legacy in our Community
One of the wonderful annual traditions at Agudath Sholom is the presentation of the George and Ziporah Freedberg Spirit of Excellence Award, graciously endowed by Avi and Rhoda Freedberg. The recipients of the award reflect the values of Jewish peoplehood, Torah and Israel embodied by George and Ziporah and Congregation Agudath Sholom.
At Tuesday's Annual Meeting, we presented the awards posthumously to seven individuals who passed away this year and whose lives were intertwined with our shul. Their names and Agudath Sholom are synonymous. Our generation is eternally indebted for their contributions.
I cannot do justice to each one in the limited space of a bulletin but encourage you to listen to the tributes posted on the podcast of our annual meeting. Click here..
Below are a few thoughts about each awardee.
Joan Zinbarg Hochberg - Joan was a wonderful role model for family and community. Her infectious smile and open heart captivated people. She was deeply committed to Hadassah, Federation, JFS and launched a camp scholarship fund to make Jewish camping accessible to youth.
Milt Hollander - Milt and his wife Betty were builders for our shul, community and beyond. He possessed wisdom, generosity of spirit and humility second to none. Despite his numerous accomplishments professionally and personally, you always felt comfortable in his presence. He and Betty sought opportunities to improve the lives of the employees at Omega and anyone in need.
Gloria Lotstein - The Lotstein family name is synonymous with Agudath Sholom. Gloria was proud of their legacy. She was a woman deeply devoted to her family and exuded a love of life and positive spirit. Her grace and smile were contagious. Together with her husband Ralph, of blessed memory, they developed a circle of friends whose families' lives centered around Agudath Sholom.
Larry Miller - Larry was everywhere in our shul. He was a mitzvah man who was a model of making his days count. Whether through the Men's Club, daily minyan, or bingo to his work for Stamford baseball and our city, he was committed to opening his hand and heart to his family, shul and community.
Michael Rosmarin - Michael was a mensch par excellence, an elegant man and a giver who lived his life to honor others. He was the longest serving executive member of CAS and led our high holiday honors program for years. His humility, wisdom, generosity, institutional memory and grace endeared him to so many young and old in our congregation. His hug and smile were unforgettable.
Millie Schifreen - Millie grew up in the shadow of Agudath Sholom as a child and never left. A life long devotee to Hadassah, she received the Woman of the Year Award. She loved the shul and attended every Shabbat. To her everlasting credit, she never allowed her sight disability to limit her. She pushed forward with determination and spunk to overcome her challenges to serve God in prayer, connect with shul members on Shabbat and religiously attend Rabbi Walk's Tuesday evening classes.
Sol Young - Sol was a long standing leader, philanthropist, community builder and soul partner for Rabbi Joe in building the shul. In the 1960s, he hosted meetings at his home for the construction plans every Sunday. He exuded humility, deep optimism, love of family and desire to seize every moment and turn problems into solutions. He celebrated the image of God in everyone and is inextricably tied to our past and future.
The memory of each awardee lives on with their family - and our shul. They are deeply missed and serve as an inspiration for all of us. May their memories be for a blessing and may we share happy occasions together with their families in the future.
Wishing you and your families a Shabbat Shalom,
Rabbi Daniel Cohen
