Are you a Grasshopper?
Do we occupy someone else's land by strength of our military might or are we living in areas which have been ours for the past four thousand years by strength of our historic rights?
It all depends upon how we view history, the Divine covenant and how we view ourselves. How is it possible that following the miracles of the Exodus and the Revelation at Sinai, that 10 leaders of Israel fomented such fear among the populace of Israel? What happened to their faith?
One of the answers emerges from the following aspect of their report. In describing their meeting giants in Israel, they told the nation, "We were like grasshoppers in our own eyes and so that was how we appeared in their eyes." (Numbers 13:33) The real sin of the spies was that they stopped believing in themselves, in their mission and in the Divine covenant. The Canaanites saw them as they saw themselves, as "grasshoppers".
Wear your Jewish pride. I recently spoke to a young man, Uri Turk, a former IDF lone soldier from Miami, who together with his friend, Yehuda Moskowitz, started a company, Pic a Kippah, to inspire Jews worldwide to show and wear their Jewish pride. Uri sent me some samples available in the Sisterhood gift shop and I encourage you to visit and share their website. https://picakippa.com/
Be alert to the truth. Know your facts. I encourage you to sign up for a few organizational email alerts that are very helpful. They are www.standwithus.com, www.unitedwithisrael.org and www.honestreporting.com.
We must always remember that our right to the land of Israel emerges not from world sympathy in the aftermath of the Holocaust, nor by virtue of an occupation, but by Divine right. God created the earth and offered the land of Israel to us as our homeland. In the face of efforts to delegitimize Israel, terrorize her citizens and offer the canard of occupation as an obstacle to peace, it is even more important to hold our heads high, restore belief in our historic heritage and pursue peace through strength.
We believe that in the days of redemption, Jerusalem will be a place of prayers for all nations while serving as our eternal capital and Israel as our homeland.
Wishing you and your families a Shabbat Shalom and Happy July 4th weekend,
Rabbi Daniel Cohen

WELCOME new member Audrey Waldstreicher. So nice to have you in Stamford!
Introducing the Shabbat Atria Mitzvah Mission Spreading joy and building community reflects the values of our shul. Our clergy periodically leads pre-Shabbat Friday afternoon programs at Atria Stamford, 77 3rd Street. This year, we are stepping it up and launching the Stamford Atria Mitzvah Mission. The goal of the Mitzvah mission is to enrich the seniors' experience through friendship, song and joy. Beginning next Friday, July 8th at 2:30 PM, we will conduct a monthly program joined by musical accompaniment. Next week, join me and Kate & Peretz Cik to share the spirit of Shabbat. Whether adults or kids, your presence will enhance the ambiance and ruach. Let me know if you would like to join the Atria Mitzvah mission. Thank you and looking forward to seeing you next week!
Rabbi Daniel Cohen's Halacha of the Week - Milk and Meat
  • Question: What does the designation DE signify? Is it possible that a food may be certified with a D but not actually contain dairy ingredients?

Answer: Thanks for your question. Some foods contain DE designation which means that although the food does not contain diary ingredients, it may have been harvested or processed on dairy equipment. As such, it may be eaten immediately after meat but not together with meat. Interestingly, the Orthodox Union no longer uses this designation, but will certify a food as dairy even if it does not list a diary product. One example is Oreo cookies. When asked the rationale for this policy, the OU explained, "In many cases, the product may actually contain dairy ingredients. The most common example is that of "non-dairy" creamers. While most of the ingredients are pareve (non-dairy), they almost always contain sodium casseinate, a dairy ingredient. Sometimes, a dairy ingredient could be listed among dairy ingredients without being itemized. For example, butter flavors are sometimes listed together with other flavors under the name "natural flavors."

Also, the rules regarding dairy equipment are somewhat complex. Therefore to avoid confusion, we thought it more prudent to just leave everything marked as "dairy." Second, and more significantly, we have found that many companies do not completely clean off their machinery after running dairy products on them. We do not feel it is proper to take responsibility for clean ups at which we are not present. Therefore, we felt it is safer to leave dairy equipment products marked with a dairy designation, so that we do not take responsibility for any possible traces of dairy left from the machinery."

To enquire whether a particular product marked as dairy really contains dairy ingredients, contact the OU Kosher Hotline at 1-212-613-8241..
Shabbat Table Conversation of the Week - Parshat Shelach According to Jewish mystical sources, each piece of fruit carries within it a force of life, a soul, and the fruit grown in the land of Israel has additional holiness. Has your behavior ever been influenced spiritually by the types of fruit or food that you eat?
