Knock First

Whenever we read the Torah, we should ask what is its relevance for today?

Some Torah portions are more easily adaptable to a modern message than others. This week is one of the more challenging at first blush. The Parsha of Tetzave speaks about the role of Aharon in lighting the menorah in the Tabernacle and the garments of the Kohanim. What are the life lessons for us?

In truth, the intricate design of the garments are laden with mystical significance and import. However, none of the purposes are spelled out except for one. The Kohen Gadol wore a four-cornered robe of blue wool whose hem was adorned with alternating golden pomegranates and bells. The Torah tells us it is because, "Its sound should be heard when he enters the Sanctuary before Hashem."

Our Sages explain that the bells are meant to teach us basic decency and decorum. We must not invade the privacy of others by injecting ourselves into their presence without warning. Proper etiquette is to knock on the door before entering. Just as the bells announced the Kohen Gadol's arrival in the Sanctuary, so must we announce ourselves wherever we go and not barge in unexpectedly.

The rationale is odd. God knows when the Kohen Gadol is approaching. Why did the Torah choose to teach this lesson in this setting?

The commentators explain that the Torah is teaching us that even in the pursuit of high spiritual goals one cannot bend the rules of simple decency. For this reason, some people recite the words, "I accept upon myself the commandment to love my neighbor as themselves, as they enter into Shul to pray to God." Our vertical relationship depends on our horizontal relationships. Nothing was more important than the Kohen Gadol entering the Holy of Holies, and yet the rules of simple decency always took precedence.

Wishing you and your families a Shabbat Shalom,

Rabbi Daniel Cohen
