Shabbat Shalom

Every year prior to Purim, we have an obligation of Zachor. We read Zachor to not only remember but to refortify ourselves to our historic mission to fight against the theology of Amalek, redouble our efforts to stand proudly as Jews, advocate for Israel, and stand resolute against the forces of evil in the world. Unfortunately, the recent terror in Israel reflects the existence of the Amalek philosophy.

The Mitzvah of Zachor also calls on us to stand against hate and bigotry. Shabbat Zachor challenges us to focus more on our responsibility to generate goodwill within our corner of the world, our family, our schools and community. Are we standing up for others when they are threatened? Do we use our speech to uplift or diminish another? Are we able to disagree without being disagreeable? What are we doing every day to spread light and not stand idly by in a culture of increased hate?

God willing, we will witness the eradication of the ideology of Amalek, which preaches hate and racism and we will build a society rooted in the belief and deed that every human being is created with a Divine spark worthy of love and respect. May we lead lives publicly and privately that hasten the redemption of the world and the coming of the Messiah.

Zachor will be read during and at the end of all minyanim and at 5:15 PM prior to Mincha.

We are also excited to offer a full array of Purim programming and readings. We will host a family friendly reading in the sanctuary on Purim night with a special kids corner organized with raffles and fun by Dovi. Following the Megillah readings, everyone is invited for Pizza and Hamentashen on the house and a carnival for kids. Join us Tuesday to share the joy of Purim at Atria at 2 PM and Edge Hill at 4 PM.

Finally, one of the prime mitzvot of Purim is Matanot L'Evyonim, gifts to the needy. We encourage everyone to bring food for the Freedberg Family Kosher Food Pantry to the shul this coming week and especially on Monday evening, March 6th, during the Fast of Esther when you arrive for the Megillah Reading. Click here for more info about foods to bring. Take a moment to contribute to the Purim Charity Fund to fulfill the mitzvah of Matanot L'evyonim.

Wishing you and your families a Shabbat Shalom, easy and meaningful fast and Purim Sameach,

Rabbi Daniel Cohen

Halacha Corner from Rabbi Cohen  Matanot Levyonim - Gifts to the Poor for Purim. Giving to the poor is a mitzvah all year round. However, the mitzvah to do so on Purim is separate even from the general mitzvah of tzedakah (charity). To fulfill the mitzvah of Matanot L'evyonim one must give charity to two individual poor people. One should give each poor person enough money to provide for a meal ($10). Matanot L'evyonim should be given early enough on Purim so that the poor can benefit on the holiday. Checks can be made out to CAS for this purpose or make your donation on-line at Purim Charity Fund. Funds will be distributed on Purim day. The funds raised for this mitzvah will be locally distributed via Jewish Family Service and in Jerusalem.

Fast of Esther - Monday, March 6th, 2023
  • Fast Begins - 5:08 AM
  • Shacharit - 6:30AM/7:30AM
