Sharing Stories of Faith

This week, when the email went out about the passing of Harry Weinroth, a Holocaust survivor, and beloved member of our community, I received a note stating, "He seemed like an amazing man. Are there other survivors? It seems like my family missed an opportunity to learn about this man." Harry's life story of emerging from the ashes of the Shoah to build a family, start a business, create a Stamford home for other survivors and embrace life is truly inspiring. We wish his family continued comfort in the days ahead.

The exchange reminded me that one of the strength of our nation lies in the sharing of stories across generations. The prime commandment emerging from the Exodus from Egypt is to retell the story of the redemption. For thousands of years, on Passover night around the world, parents turn to children and share memories and the meaning of a story heard from their own parents or grandparents. "Ask your parents and they will tell you, your elders and they will share," was one of Moshe's final messages. It is not enough to simply read our history in a book You must look in the eyes of a survivor and our forbearers and learn of the strength and spirit of their journey.

Recently, I learned a new story about my mother, of blessed memory, who when offered a job in the mid-1960's at AT&T explained that she could not work on Shabbat. They told her that the job would only be available if she was wiling to work on Shabbat. She refused and stood up for her beliefs. AT&T offered her the job. Her story of conviction and courage speaks volumes.

If you have a story to share with your children and grandchildren, do not hesitate. Thank God, we have a growing congregation of younger members and we must never lose sight of the value of fostering face-to-face opportunities to hear and learn from each other.

In this spirit, I invite you to join us Monday evening, February 26th at 7:30 PM at CAS for a special event, "A Young Man and a Survivor" featuring Judith Altman, a Holocaust survivor and community treasure, and Aaron Liebskind, an 8th grader at BCDS and author of The Yellow Star: A Light Shines in the Dark. It promises to be a inspiring evening linking generations past, present and future.

Take time to reach out to your parents, grandparents, a survivor, a veteran and hear their stories. God willing, the conversations will not only deepen our relationships, but inspire the future generations to embody the timeless values of our Torah, nation and faith.

Wishing you and your families a Shabbat Shalom,

Rabbi Daniel Cohen

Priority For Who Leads Davening
There are numerous customs for someone observing a Yahrzeit. They include learning in a person's memory, reciting kaddish, lighting a candle, reciting brachot in a person's memory and more. One of the questions that arises occurs when a person who is observing wants to be a shaliach tzibur and lead the davening. It is important to note that only a child observing a Yahrzeitfor a parent has an obligation to lead the davening. As a reminder, the following list is the order of priorities for being a shaliach tzibur.
  1. Mourner during Shiva
  2. Yahrzeit for a Parent
  3. Mourner in Shloshim
  4. Mourner during the year
For more information, questions, please contact Rabbi Cohen or Rabbi Zweiter. May we share semachot in our famlies in year ahead.
