Message
This weekend, our thoughts and prayers are with the families and community in Brussels whose lives were turned upside down. Due to security concerns, the Jews in Brussels stayed at home this Purim. 33 people were murdered and hundreds more wounded in a terrorist attack. We wish everyone strength and comfort.
Evil perpetuated by radical Islamist theology represents the ideology of Amalek in the world. It must be eradicated, not contained. We understand that the struggles are not Israel's alone, but all of western civilization. We pray for courageous leadership in the fight and must do our utmost to engage in advocating for the U.S/Israel relationship and global clarity and resolve. G-d willing, as the story of Purim conveys, we will experience a period of light over darkness and hope over despair. May redemption come speedily in our days.
Thank G-d, our Agudath Sholom delegation of 80 returned from a stimulating and inspiring AIPAC conference. G-d willing, I will share some reflections next Shabbat morning, April 3rd.
This Shabbat we are joined by two important speakers. On Shabbat morning, we will hear Sgt. Benjamin Anthony of Our Soldiers Speak. I heard him at AIPAC in 2013 and he is very inspiring. We are grateful to Len and Susan Mark for arranging his visit and his presentation in memory of Len's sister, Gloria Mark Spivak. Sgt. Anthony was close with Gloria and I am sure his words will be a tribute to her memory. In light of the recent attacks in Brussels, our seudah shlishit speaker, Evan Bernstein, ADL's NY Regional Director, is as timely as ever. His topic: Anti-Semitism Today: Global to Local.
We are also looking forward to three great events in the next few days. We start our Man Up Bnai Mitzvah series for fathers and sons this Sunday at 9:15 AM at the shul. For more info, visit https://sites.google.com/a/cas-stamford.org/youth/bar-bat-mitzvah-classes.
Also on Sunday, the Men's Club invites you to their annual Passover Mitzvah Fair. Beyond the Judaica, wines and more, we will be joined by the new Rabbi at Ahavath Achim in Fairfield, Rabbi Yirmiyahu Modovan, who is also a scribe. He will be checking Meszuot and offering maintenance on Tefillin. Thank you to Mitchell Bell for his boundless dedication and leadership to our Men's Club.
Finally, please join us on Monday evening at 8 PM, in conjunction with AJC Westchester/Fairfield, to hear Shimon Mercer Wood, the Israeli Consul in New York for Media Affairs, speak about current issues affecting Israel.
Of course, it is not too late to sign up and support our annual dinner which promises God willing to be a memorable and special evening!
Wishing you and your families a Shabbat Shalom and a week of peace in Israel and the world,
Rabbi Daniel Cohen
Welcome New Members Melissa & Daryl Litwak and Liatte & David Lasher and their families
Yasher Koach to Hillary Isaacs and Tricia Hoff and their committee, Rachel Hager, Sara Breiner, Diane Samelson, and Rachel Cohen, for organizing a super Purim Seudah and Dr Stu and Sandy Waldstreicher, Alice Janush, Howard Weiss, Matt Feinberg, Kim Mahoney, Sara Malka and Tamar Cohen for the uplifting ambience on Purim night.
Rabbi Cohen's Halacha Question of the Week
  • Question: I enjoy cholent throughout the year in every season. Any reminders from a halachic perspective?
  • Answer: I am also a big cholent fan even in the hottest days of the summer. What is Shabbos without cholent? Thanks for your question. Here are a few guidelines:

Make sure the cholent is at least half cooked before Shabbat starts. The Rabbis estimated half of the amount of time to fully cook would render the cholent minimally edible. If the cholent takes five hours to cook, prepare the pot 2.5 hours before the onset of Shabbat. If one forgot to prepare the cholent, one may put the cholent up immediately before Shabbat, as there is no concern of stirring it to hasten cooking. Do not stir the cholent while in the crock pot. Also, it is preferable to remove the ceramic insert of the crock pot before transferring the contents to a serving dish. Adding water to a cholent in the crock pot is permitted in certain circumstances. Please be in touch with me for specific guidelines
Shabbat Table Conversation - Tzav The Chasidic master S'fat Emet explains that there are two kinds of fire. Fire that consumes and fire that gives light. Can you think of examples of this paradigm in Judaism? In personal growth and in relationships? What aspect of Judaism lights your inner fire?
Israel Advocacy Israel Advocacy Love Israel Products Israel Featured Products of the Week from Love Israel Products (LIPS) - Are you worried about all that sugar your kids are going to consume as they enjoy their Purim sweets, and how it will affect their teeth? Amazon now sells Kosher tooth paste/mouth wash made in Israel! http://www.amazon.com/Toothpaste-Mouthwash-Blue0inl-Kosher/dp/B00ASTPHU6/ref=sr_1_sc_1_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1458841494&sr=8-1-spell&keywords=israeli+tooth+paste
Israel Solidarity Committee - Rabbi Cohen and Ben Lanson are working to organize Israel advocacy and support at CAS. We are looking for 3-4 people to serve as an Israel solidarity steering committee, aimed at building up partnerships with other organizations supporting Israel, rallying community support and action on Israel's behalf, and educating the community about Israel and Israel advocacy. If you are interested, please contact Rabbi Cohen (rabbicohen@cas-stamford.org) or Ben Lanson (ben.lanson@gmail.com)
Kosher Alert
  • Bicerin Originale Di Giandujotto Liqueur and Bicerin Original White Liqueur - The Orthodox Union certifies Bicerin Originale Di Giandujotto Liqueur and Bicerin Original White Liqueur only when bearing the OU symbol. Miniatures bottles of these products are currently being sold in stores without the OU Symbol. The Orthodox Union does not certify those miniature bottles and consumers should not assume those miniature bottles are kosher certified products.
  • Driftwood 99% Fat Free Vanilla Flavored Lowfat Yogurt - The Orthodox Union does not currently certify Driftwood 99% Fat Free Vanilla Flavored Lowfat Yogurt. This product contains gelatin. The containers are labeled with a 'K' on the cup, however, some lids bear an unauthorized OU. Corrective actions have been implemented. The company is working to reformulate this product, and the Orthodox Union anticipates certifying this product. The certified product will bear an OU D on both the cup and the lid.

Dr. Dovid Katz: The Old Hebrew -Yiddish Conflict and Its Ongoing Legacies
Dr. Katz's involvement with Holocaust issues started with his thousands of hours of Yiddish dialectological interviews with survivors from the historic Lithuanian lands and turned to both academic research and public activism when Lithuanian prosecutors began accusing survivors of "war crimes" for having joined the anti-Nazi partisans. He coined the term "Holocaust Obfuscation" to define 21st century East European revisionism and in 2009 founded the web journal DefendingHistory.com which he has edited since.

Hailing from Sydney, Australia, he studied in Yeshivot in Eretz Yisrael for 11 years, including Ohr Somayach, the Mir Yeshiva, and the Jerusalem Kollel under the auspices of Rav Yitzchak Berkovits.
