Lighting Another Flame

One of the Torah's most beautiful lessons about leadership appears in a subtle detail near the end of Parashat Pinchas.

God tells Moshe that the time has come to appoint his successor. While Moshe may have hoped that one of his own children would continue his mission, God chooses Yehoshua instead. God instructs Moshe to place one hand upon Yehoshua in a public act of succession.

Yet when the Torah describes what actually happened, Moshe does something remarkable. Instead of placing one hand on Yehoshua's head, he places both hands upon him.

Why?

The Midrash offers a powerful insight. There are two ways to think about passing something on. One is like pouring water from one cup into another. As I fill your cup, mine becomes emptier. Leadership, influence, and opportunity can begin to feel like limited resources that must be protected.

But there is another image. Leadership is like lighting a candle.

When one candle lights another, the original flame loses nothing. Instead, the room becomes brighter. Sharing wisdom, confidence, encouragement, and purpose does not diminish us; it multiplies our impact.

That is why Moshe gave Yehoshua more than the minimum that was required. By placing both hands upon him, he conveyed wholehearted confidence, generous support, and an unwavering commitment to Yehoshua's success. Moshe understood that his greatest legacy would not simply be the miracles he performed or the Torah he taught, but the leader he empowered to carry the mission forward.

The lesson extends far beyond formal leadership. Every parent, teacher, mentor, coach, employer, and friend has the opportunity to kindle another person's flame. Our task is not merely to transfer knowledge or skills, but to awaken purpose. We are called to help people discover not only what they can do, but who they are capable of becoming.

The greatest leaders never fear someone else's success. They celebrate it. They understand that influence is not a zero-sum game. Every time we encourage another person, believe in them, or help them grow, our own light is not diminished, it shines even more brightly.

May we follow Moshe's example, generously sharing our wisdom, our faith, and our confidence with others, helping kindle flames that will illuminate our families, our community, and generations to come.

Wishing you and your families a Shabbat Shalom and a joyous July 4th weekend,

Rabbi Daniel Cohen

America at 250 – A Special Shabbat Celebration
Join us this Shabbat morning as we commemorate the 250th anniversary of the United States with a meaningful celebration of gratitude, freedom, and responsibility.

During services, Rabbi Cohen will deliver a special sermon, “The Flag at Dawn: Freedom's Blessing and Our Responsibility” and we will hear brief reflections from members of our congregation on what America has meant to their families.

At the conclusion of services, we are honored to welcome members of the Stamford Police Department and Stamford Fire Department as we express our heartfelt appreciation to the first responders who protect and serve our community each day. Together, we will conclude our celebration by singing The Star-Spangled Banner and God Bless America in gratitude for the freedoms we enjoy and for all those who help safeguard them.
Summer Dress Reminder We respectfully ask that those receiving an aliyah, leading any portion of our services, performing hagbah or gelilah, opening the Aron Kodesh, or participating in other synagogue honors refrain from wearing shorts or flip-flops. Thank you for helping preserve the dignity of our tefillot, the sanctity of our synagogue, and the honor of these sacred roles.
