Soul Food: Sanctifying Our Meals
Do we live to eat or eat to live?
How we experience food and the nature of our meals reveals much about who we are and who we want to be. Do we simply consume food to fill a gastronomic need or sanctify the food and company as a way to grow closer to God, Torah and each other?
The Manna, the Heavenly gift from God in the week's Parsha, reminds us of the spiritual potential of food. According to Rabbi Akiva, the Manna possessed a ray of the Divine encrusted in physicallity. When eaten, manna would nourish not only the body but the soul. Rabbi Issac Luria opines that two people can eat the same apple but gain varying benefit. The one who recites the blessing before consumption unlocks sparks of God within the apple inaccessible to the person who does not recite the blessing. According to Jewish mysticism, the laws of kashrut reflect the spiritual realities of foods. Some foods clog our souls while others connect our souls to the Divine.
The topic of the spirituality of food is broad and deep. Here are three suggestions to elevate our meals:
  1. Recite Blessings with Concentration - Here is a guide - http://www.chabad.org/library/article_cdo/aid/278538/jewish/Basic-Blessings-on-Food-Guide.htm
  2. Plan a Shabbat Table Conversation. As a weekly feature in the bulletin, I will include a Torah Table conversation. Yeshiva University provides a great resource - http://www.yutorah.org/shabbattable/ This week's topic: Be a Nachshon - the first person to walk into the sea. What is the most courageous or giving act you have ever witnessed? That you have ever done?
  3. No Gossip Pledge - Remember the words of Eleanor Roosevelt Great minds discuss ideas; average minds discuss events; small minds discuss people.
On a different note, this Shabbat we expect snow. Here is a fascinating article about snow removal contracts and Shabbat. www.torah.org/advanced/weekly-halacha/5759/yisro.html. First and foremost, stay safe. I received the following question of interest. "Rabbi, I need to say kaddish this Shabbat and am concerned I will not be able to attend due to the snow. What should I do?" I answered, "It would be best to ask someone who will attend shul to say kaddish on your behalf and lean a mishna in memory of your loved one."
Wishing everyone a warm and safe Shabbat Shalom,
Rabbi Daniel Cohen
Important Notice about the Boxwood gate: A new lock was installed on the gate. It is still unlocked on Shabbat; Just turn the handle.

Heroic Children represents every stripe of young Jewish victim, from every corner of Europe and from every religious, national and socioeconomic background. What they all shared in common was an iron will to live- but not at all costs.
