  • DOCUMENTARY NIGHT: ROSENWALD - WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 5 @ 7:30PM POST-FILM Q&A WITH SCREENWRITER & DIRECTOR AVIVA KEMPNER Nominated for the Nashville Film Festival Grand Jury Prize in 2015, Rosenwald tells the touching story of Chicago philanthropist Julius Rosenwald, the son of immigrants, who rose to head Sears and Roebuck. Inspired by the Jewish ideals of tzedakah (charity) and tikkun olam (repairing the world), the social teachings of his rabbi, Emil Hirsch, and a deep concern over racial inequality in America, Rosenwald set out to make a difference. He became one of the country's most effective philanthropists. By the time of his death in 1932, Rosenwald had funded the building of 5,400 schools across the segregated American South, providing 660,000 children with access to education. He partnered with Booker T. Washington to build not only schools but also YMCAs and housing for disadvantaged African American communities during the grim Jim Crow era. Recipients of his seminal Rosenwald Fund for African American Artists included Gordon Parks, Jr., Augusta Katherine Dunham, Ralph Ellison, W.E.B. Du Bois and Langston Hughes. Interviewees in the film include: Maya Angelou, Julian Bond, Congressman John Lewis, Benjamin Jealous and Ossie Davis. Hear accounts of his admirable endeavors from Rosenwald school alumni, relatives and many others that were inspired by him. Director Aviva Kempner, daughter of a Holocaust survivor, is dedicated to telling the untold stories of Jewish heroes. In addition to starting The Ciesla Foundation and the Washington Jewish Film Festival, Kempner has directed and produced a number of award-winning, educational documentaries. She produced Partisans of Vilna, a documentary on Jewish resistance against the Nazis; produced and directed the Peabody-winning documentary The Life and Times of Hank Greenberg about the Jewish baseball slugger who fought anti-Semitism, and Yoo-Hoo, Mrs. Goldberg, the story of the television pioneer, Gertrude Berg.
