Shabbat Shalom

Have you experienced God today?

As a child, I learned the song "Hashem is here, Hashem is there, Hashem is truly everywhere." When was the last time we felt God's presence? I recently asked someone this question and the person responded with an event in their lives from over 20 years ago. It was a moment of deep joy and soulfulness when the person felt truly alive. However, although it was an inspiring story, life is not intended to be lived this way. Life is not a highlight reel but we are designed to experience God continually.

The first word of the Torah portion challenges us to tap into a Divine frequency every day. The Ishbitzer Rebbe explains that God is ready to shower us with His presence. However, we must be ready to anticipate a Divine moment. The word "Kadosh" signifies soulful sight and seeing the possibilities for holiness in every moment and every place.

The Parsha enjoins us to see God in every encounter. A mitzvah is a moment of connection with the Divine. Do not turn a blind eye to a mitzvah opportunity. Pick up a lost object and return it. Stand up for an elderly person. Make a blessing on food before consumption. Do not stand idly by in the face of an injustice. Even the two minute walk from the doors of the JCC to the gym, can be filled with spiritual meaning. Do we extend a greeting to those who walk by? Do we hold the door or share a smile?

God is ready for you. As Jacob exclaimed when he awoke from his dream. "God is in this place and I did not know. This is a house of God and the gate to Heaven." Anticipate God in your life. Be ready to receive His love. Be Holy and you will experience the Divine each and every day.

Wishing you and your families a Shabbat Shalom,
Rabbi Daniel Cohen

Sent to Rabbi Cohen from Senator Richard Blumenthal

April 29, 2015

Friend,

I have received many questions from constituents regarding my efforts to stop a nuclear-armed Iran, and I wanted to give you a full understanding of my work in the Senate on this important issue.

Reading and listening long and hard - in public forums, private conversations, and secure classified briefings - I am guided by two paramount goals: stopping a nuclear-armed Iran, and doing it by peaceful means.

An Iran with nuclear weapons would be an urgent, intolerable threat to American security. Almost immediately, it would lead to the proliferation of such weapons throughout the Middle East, creating a nuclear tinderbox and endangering our allies, most obviously Israel.

I strongly support negotiations to stop this threat. That is why I advocated and helped lead legislation imposing severe economic sanctions on Iran - with the goal of bringing the Iranians to the table. After the sanctions succeeded, and talks began, I supported S. 269, the bipartisan Kirk-Menendez Bill, to strengthen sanctions if the talks failed. The result so far is a very general "framework" or "understanding," which contains significant gaps and unanswered questions but is sufficient to continue the talks, which are now ongoing.

I hope and believe these negotiations can succeed. Obstacles remain - complex issues concerning research and development on centrifuges, amounts of uranium, lifting of sanctions, and inspectors' access to enrichment sites, to name a few. Surmounting these obstacles is certainly possible, albeit deeply challenging. Any final agreement must be airtight, comprehensive, and enduring - and, perhaps most importantly, strictly verifiable and enforceable. We can settle for nothing less.

Meeting this goal means that Congress must have a role in reviewing and scrutinizing any final agreement. The plain fact is that Congress imposed the sanctions by statute, and only Congress can permanently lift them. But even apart from constitutional requirements, Congress has a responsibility to make sure that this agreement squares with our enduring need for security and strong national defense, as I know well from my service on the Armed Services Committee. That is why I was an original and leading co-sponsor of the bipartisan S. 615, the Nuclear Agreement Review Act of 2015 (also known as the Corker-Menendez Bill), which was adopted unanimously in April 2015 by the Foreign Relations Committee after valuable modifications. The President's acceptance of this measure reaffirms my support. I will continue to insist that Congress meet its responsibility.

Just as I appreciate the Administration's steadfast perseverance and diligent work in these negotiations, I oppose any steps that would impede or, in my judgment, interfere with them. Even as the President has said that all options must be on the table - and I agree - our best option is diplomacy and other peaceful means. I support that effort.

As always, I welcome your thoughts and views about these critically important issues. Hearing from you enables me to listen and learn.

Thank you,

Senator Richard Blumenthal

Statement from the Rabbinical Council of America and Giving Opportunity

The Rabbinical Council of America shares in the world's horror over the terrible loss of lives in the recent Nepal earthquake. Our mentor, the late, Rabbi Joseph Soloveitchik, of blessed memory, reminded us that "the responsibility implicit in human existence" makes it our duty to respond to the world in crisis. As members of the world community, and as Jews, we mourn the rising death toll and colossal destruction caused by the earthquake in Nepal. We call upon the members of our community to support the massive relief efforts underway. The RCA applauds the efforts of the American and Israeli governments in providing emergency aid to the Nepalcommunity, and supports the Nepal Relief Fund of the Federations of North America (https://secure-fedweb.jewishfederations.org/page/contribute/nepal-relief-fund).

Message from the President about the CAS Boxwood Drive Entry

Over the past several weeks, I have received various comments and concerns from our neighbors and users of the gate at the CAS Boxwood Drive Entry. As you know, we want to maintain a good relationship with all our neighbors, while balancing the needs of our members and their guests. With that goal in mind, please be aware of the following:

  • We plan to continue our policy of locking the gate except on Shabbat and holidays. If you need to use the gate during the week to gain access, CAS members can get the entry code by calling the office.
  • On Shabbat and holidays, the gate will no longer be able to be locked. After the end of Shabbat or holidays, we will re-enable the lock. We have worked to keep the gate in good working condition and alignment.
  • When you use the gate, please close it (gently). If it is locked, please re-lock it after use.

Thanks for your help in this matter,
Dr. Stuart Waldstreicher
President

President
