Rabbi Daniel Cohen's Halacha of the Week - Laws Of The 3 Weeks
During the three weeks between the 17th of Tammuz until after Tisha B'Av, the custom is to observe some aspects of mourning over the destruction of the Holy Temple in Jerusalem. The observance intensifies as Tisha B'Av approaches. This Sunday, July 24th, we observe the fast of the 17th of Tammuz.
The three weeks begins on Sunday and ends on Sunday, August 14th. The observances of mourning are the following:
1. Weddings should not be performed during this period.
2. Listening to musical instruments is prohibited. Acapella is permitted.
3. We refrain from reciting the blessing "sh'hecheyanu" on new garments or fruit, except on Shabbat.
4. We refrain from taking a haircut during this period.
If you have questions, please be in touch. The guidelines are designed to awaken within us the loss of the Temple and spur us to evaluate our own efforts in mending a broken world. God willing, through our meaningful observance of these rituals, we will merit to see the redemption and building of the third Beit Hamikdash speedily in our days.
Wishing you and your families a Shabbat Shalom,
Rabbi Daniel Cohen
HIGH HOLIDAY 5777 RESERVED SEATS Make sure you have your desired seat in any of our three services-return the form included in your dues statement or contact Matt at mfeinberg@cas-stamford.org.
Heat Advisory from Rabbi Cohen Due to the expected heat on Shabbat, please dress wisely and hydrate when walking to CAS or in the park. Also, when fasting on Sunday, from dusk until nightfall, be aware that if you feel lightheaded, you should drink. Pregnant and nursing women are also exempt from fasting. If you have questions, please be touch with me.

Introducing the Shabbat Shalom Mitzvah Mission Bring a Smile to our members. Let them know we are thinking of them. We recently launched an initiative to call our seniors and wish them a Shabbat Shalom, share shul updates, see how we can be helpful and check in. If you would like to join the Shabbat Shalom Team or you know someone who is home bound and might appreciate a call, please contact Rabbi Cohen or Mitzvah Mission chair, Phyllis Shapiro (phyllshap@yahoo.com). We ask for 15 minutes a week. With one call, you can make someone smile and make their day!
Introducing the Shabbat Atria Mitzvah Mission Spreading joy and building community reflects the values of our shul. Our clergy periodically leads pre-Shabbat Friday afternoon programs at Atria Stamford, 77 3rd Street. This year, we are stepping it up and launching the Stamford Atria Mitzvah Mission. The goal of the Mitzvah mission is to enrich the seniors' experience through friendship, song and joy. Join me and Kate & Peretz Cik on Friday, August 19 at 2:30 PM to share the spirit of Shabbat. Whether adults or kids, your presence will enhance the ambiance and ruach. Let me know if you would like to join the Atria Mitzvah mission. Thank you!
Shabbat Table Conversation Balak Who is responsible for Bilaam's attempt to curse the Jews? Balak may be partially responsible since he tempted Bilaam with honor and wealth. Perhaps he violated the Torah prohibition against placing a stumbling block in front of a blind person. Applications of this principle range from traffic signs to weapon sales to advertising and much more. How? Can you think of ramifications of these principles in politics, business or contemporary society?
