Shabbat Chazon This Shabbat is Shabbat Chazon. As we reflect on the meaning of the Nine Days and Tisha B'Av, it is important to remember that these are not only days of mourning and restrictions, but as important is to increase loving kindness. The Temple was destroyed because of interpersonal hatred and it will be rebuilt due to love. As God is forgiving, we must be forgiving. As God sees the best in us and judges favorably, we must see the best in other people. May we merit to see the rebuilding of the Temple and a full redemption speedily and in our days. Wishing you and your families a Shabbat Shalom, Rabbi Daniel Cohen

Halacha Corner - Saturday Night Havdalah - During the nine days we do not drink wine or grape juice as a sign of mourning. The exception is Shabbat and at a seudat mitzvah. The question arises as to what bracha to use for Havdalah on Saturday night. Jewish law teaches that we can use Chamar Medina, a "national beverage" which includes beer or orange juice to name a few. If a child is available, you may ask him/her to drink the grape juice and if you did use wine or grape juice inadvertently you may drink it. To learn more visit these sites click here and click here. For more info, contact Rabbi Cohen or Rabbi Kurtz. |
SAVE THE DATE! Chief Rabbi Dr Warren Goldstein, Chief Rabbi of the Union of Orthodox Synagogues of South Africa, will be joining us over zoom for a Pre-Rosh Hashanah lecture Sunday, August 30th at 11:30am. Stay tuned for the topic, and details on how to register for the zoom link. |
