Fill the Void: A Response to the Har Nof Massacre

Thank G-d, our MALT journey to Israel has been meaningful, uplifting and rewarding on so many levels. A special Yasher Koach to Rabbi Tzvi Bernstein for organizing such a memorable trip.

Below is one reflection from this week.

This past week, I had dinner with my nephew Moshe Dovid who studies at Yeshivat Torat Moshe where Rabbi Moshe Twersky served as a teacher of Torah. During the week of shiva, a single candle burned in his empty classroom. A tribute to the immense loss of his presence. No students and only a flame.

Yet, how do we respond to the tragic loss of his life, his colleagues and the Druze officer? The families lives are forever changed. Yet, how can we pay tribute to them and grow from the experience?

The answer is to fill the void.

We had the privilege yesterday to hear Rabbi Dovid Kopinsky, brother of Rabbi Aryeh Kopinsky who was also murdered in Har Nof. He shared that his brother was deeply committed to Torah and also Chesed. He looked for opportunities to help wherever he could. Imagine now the vacuum that exists in the world without the goodness of his brother, his colleagues and the Druze officer.

Rather than respond in revenge, fear, or grief, we must fill their void. We assume the mantle to increase our study of Torah and acts of kindness. We are charged in their memory to infuse the world with holiness in the merit of their souls.

The Talmud states that when one of the ten martyrs died wrapped in a Torah scroll the letters flew off the parchment. Our sacred task is to insure their letters return to earth. We are blessed with life. If you are reading this, you are fortunate to be endowed with the opportunity today to restore light into a world of darkness. What will be your contribution to filling the void? What will be your #elijahmoment?

Blessing from Israel and wishes for peace, comfort and growth in the days ahead. Shabbat shalom,
Rabbi Daniel Cohen

Message from Cantor Bokow

Dear Friends

I am now the coordinator of the weekly leining (Torah reading) and what I have been working on is on streamlining the process of the leiners so that we are prepared as a shul with the leining without the last minute pressure of looking for a leiner. I have set up a rotation of "regulars" who have volunteered to assist us. The schedule is set up approximately 6-8 weeks in advance and allows those who lein to prepare the parsha for our benefit. Having said this, I strongly encourage those who wish to participate in the leining from time to time, even if it is just an aliyah or two to please do so. This is a wonderful opportunity to lein your bar-mitzvah parsha or aliyah for the shul. Please do so by contact me as EARLY as possible so that I may put your name on the schedule without having someone else on the schedule prepare needlessly. Looking forward to working with you this.

Warm regards, Cantor B
